Hi. The Windows 7 on my laptop has fucked up a bit. Its an old laptop first gen i3 (2.13GHz dual core) was originally 2GB RAM but through my idiocity years ago I replaced one of the 1GB sticks with a 4GB stick giving it 5GB (I promise I will remove the 1GB stick leaving it with 4 more optimised GB's!!!!! I just keep not being bothered to do it!). It looks nice though so I don't want to get rid of it. It is only ever used for web browsing very occasional office work and occasional skype call as I take it when I travel.

With this in mind I was thinking of getting a cheap (though not to cheap, still from a trusted brand) SSD about 60GB in size and putting Ubuntu on it. That way I retain the HDD with Windows on it should I need it again in the future and get what should be a very very quick linux laptop for when I travel.

Has anyone seen any low priced SSDs around, on offer or anything? I am in the UK. And do you think this will be a good use of this laptop? It has become very sluggush with this windows on it as well.

Removing the 1GB stick won't optimize anything.

Getting a ssd will help get rid of the sluggishness.

Depends what you mean by cheap and what speeds you what out of it, most SSD's will improve over all speed of your laptop.

You could try http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/SanDisk+SDSSDP-064G-G25+64GB+Pulse+SATA+6Gb%2Fs+Internal+2.5+Inch+SSD+?productId=58931 if your willing to go for a SanDisk SSD

Thanks for the advice. But I am going to have to put sorting out my laptop on hold for a while. I just tried installing a game on steam on my main computer and my 1TB HDD is full (sad face) I am going to have to do the SSD + 2TB HDD upgrade I have been planning.

Amazon dropped the price of the 120GB Samsung 840 EVO to £61.56:

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.

SSHD is great for laptops.

Ample storage. Very responsive speedy usage and is just awesome compared to traditional drives.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
