I'm thinking about switching to linux but lots of my games are on windows only. What kind of performance hit could I expect if I'm trying to game on windows with an vm inside linux.

What if I was also streaming and playing games on the vm. What would I expect then as a loss?

Don't bother. You won't enjoy playing games in a virtual machine. Also, a lot of games use anti cheat programs that only work in native windows and won't work in a VM even if the game could run. I play Planetside 2. It may run in a VM but its anti cheat will absolutely not. I have actually seen people contact the company that makes the anti cheat and they were quite blunt in saying it would only work in a native windows environment. My advice: Dual boot. Use Linux for Work and some games, and just have a partition for Windows and the games you need to play on it.

Also, Steam for Linux makes a lot of games work with Proton.
