guide for mid range graphics cards in 2020 and manufactorers

nsuinteger

G’day all,

Building a pc primarily for 1080p gaming. Am interested in air cooled graphics with good performance. Somewhat confused with all the different varients of gpus (rtx 2060/ 1660 / super /  5600 / 5700 / xt) and to top it all, the variants from each vendor. (e.g. evga ko/ ftw/ xc/ sc, gygabyte and msi series, etc 😧). Is there a guide somewhere to narrow down these?

I’m after a decent performance card without breaking the bank and won’t cause me problems with heat / throttle. OC is not a must as stability and cooler system is more important for me.

Yes i’ve watched a few YT videos on fps for the above gpu chips but it didnt help much with differences among vendors and their lineup.

rest of the system:

ryzen 3600

nzxt h210

corsair 16gb 3200Mhz

wd blue nvme pcie3 256 ssd + 2.5” ssd for bulkier storage if needed.

b450i or b550i (haven't bought yet)

550w gold+ corsair or seasonic (not yet bought)

🥂

Op for that system i can presume your budget is like 2-300 pounds, for like 220 you can get a gigabyte 1660 super overclocked or at the higher end of your budget a radeon card which is more bang for you bucks

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

GPU: Gigabyte gtx 1660 Super oc 6g
Mobo:MSI b450 tomahawk max

RAM: 32gb ddr4 lpx vengeance 3200mhz

Storage: WD sn550 1tb, Baracuda 2TB HDD (*In use), Hitachi 2tb HDD, WD 0.5tb HDD (both HDD knackered)

PSU: cxm 450

Case: Corsair Carbide Series

Don't get a nzxt case. please. Get a Phanteks p300a and a arctic p12 value pack. For the GPU, I'd reccomened a 5700xt Red devil if you can get your hands on it (It can perform at ~100 fps on medium settings on most  triple aaa games 1440p, and over 200 on medium at 1080p). tri-fan cooler, $410-$430 price tag, performance very close to the 2070S before you hit it with a oc. Otherwise EVGA 2060 KO at around $300 USD is decent (with 100-140 fps on medium on most triple aaa games If i'd have to guess), then just go 1660S for about $220 if it doesnt meet your budget which will still perform fine

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

  • rtx 2060, rx 5600 and the 1660 (super) would be good for 1080p
  • 5700 and 5700 xt would be good for 1440p

the biggest noticeable difference between the vendors would be the gpu's cooling, at its core, they are all the same gpu.

and because of this fact, one vendor could have better cooling than another one.

for 1080p i would personally recommend the 1660 super.

I would argue these are good for 1440 as well

The 5600xt would be similar to a 2060/s

A 1660 super would be similar to a ti ( don't get a 1660 to)

5700 is close to a 5600xt so unless you need the bigger frame buffer get a 5600xt

 5700xt is close to a 2070 super

Only get a 2070 super / 2060 / super if your streaming , because nvec h265 is awesome

Otherwise get the AMD equivalent

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

Peripherals: GK61 (Optical Gateron Red) with Mistel White/Orange keycaps, Logitech G102 (Purple), BitWit Ensemble Grey Deskpad.

Audio: Logitech G432, Moondrop Starfield, Mic: Razer Siren Mini (White).

Phone: Pixel 3a (Purple-ish).

Don't have experience with it

But for the most part these gpus would be fine for 1440

i was also trying to take into account newer triple a games.

this is what i was going for.

  • gpu a. b. and c. can run any game at 1080p 60 fps no problem
  • but gpu d. e. f. can run any game at 1440p 60 fps no problem

i wasnt trying to say gpu's a. b. and c. couldnt run games in 1440p, but i was trying to say that there are some games that it wouldnt be able to handle at 1440p.

hopefully that clears up what i meant.

I would go for a RX 5600 XT...it will be more than enough for 1080 gaming at 60+ fps

Thanks for the info. I keep seeing this point every now and then, i.e. nvec is superior. Just to get bit of context around this, is it because that cpu encoding with h264 is very bad for streaming or is it because nvidia contains a dedicated chip for encoding makes it a good buy for a use case of streaming?

Cheers,
