Ryzen 3000g series compatibility with ryzen 2000 series mobos

heard from the internet that a ryzen 3000 series apu can work with a mobo that supports ryzen 2000, since the 3000 apus are ryzen+. is this true? i have an asus b350f mobo that supports ryzen 2000 chips. will it support a ryzen 3000 chip such as the ryzen 3200g?

The 3000 series released quite a bit after the B350 boards were floating around, so it's likely you will need to do a BIOS update to make it work. Check Asus' website to see if they support the chip you're looking for on that board, they should have a table somewhere.

Ryzen 3200g isn't a Ryzen 3000 chip, it's not Zen 2 like Ryzen 3000.

 

Ryzen 2200G and 2400G were released before Ryzen 2000 series (Zen+), or during that time, but they aren't even completely Zen+.

Ryzen 3200G and 3400G are "optimized" 2200G and 2400G. Like taking the 2200G/2400G, adding some overclock and releasing them under the new name.

 

Some modern boards with Ryzen 3000 support (B550, X570) drop support for those becasue those aren't even true Zen+, just the same as they do with Zen (ryzen 1000).

With a beta bios for b350

B450 will also need a bios update to support it (assuming it's not factory updated)

The socket is still being used, the chipset is different, but still most boards support the newer chips with a BIOS update.

how do i know my board is the right bios? it was purchased june 2018. does amd still have a free bios update kit available?

Download CPU-Z and check under the "motherboard" tab, the bios version should be listed there.

Then head to https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-B350-F-GAMING/HelpDesk_CPU/ and check which BIOS the board needs.

If you already have a CPU and the motherboard, you can flash and then upgrade, but if you don't have a CPU - there are no bios flash kits available, you'd need a compatible CPU to flash.
