Why is my PC underperforming?

Moyomo

Hey,

so first off I already wondered why I had less fps in games than my friends even though I techically got better hardware.

Well today I thought maybe a Benchmark will reveal why.

Here's the important specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

GPU: MSI RTX 2070 8GB

RAM: 16GB DDR4 3600MHz

Motherboard: Aorus Elite X570

PSU: be quiet! 650W 80+ gold

CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D15 (temps are good, it's not throttling)

most up to date drivers installed and all other programs closed

On my first run of 3DMark Time Spy with stock clock speeds I got a Score of 7445

Here's more info on the result: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/47993676

That score seemed kinda low so I overclocked my GPU and got a Score of 8138 on my second run

Result info: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/47993971

Well a quick search for results with the same CPU and GPU revealed that even my OVERCLOCKED result is only better than 2% of the other results with the same hardware.

benchmark.PNG.3aa58dbefbc2f706542f539b3b96c666.PNG

the orange line is my overclocked result

So what can be the reason why my PC is underperforming?

Could it be not enough power delivered to the PSU? Is there a way to test that?

Thanks

Moyo

From what I gather, it should score about 10K.

Is your memory actually running at 3600 speeds, and at which CAS latency?

Might be worth it to lower clock speeds on the RAM slightly. DDR4-3200 at CL14 for instance,

if it won't hold 3600 at the rated CL on the DIMMs.

By default, the memory will always run at 2133.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

Yes, I have XMP enabled and the RAM is actually running at 3600MHz.

It's a 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX kit with CL18 latency

I disabled XMP and had the RAM running at 2133MHz for another round of benchmarks.

-with standard GPU clock speed (decreased from 7445 to 7365): https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/47996574

-with overclocked GPU (decreased from 8138 to 8046): https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/47996736

so I don't think the problem is memory related

Doesn't look like it, no.

What are the GPU temps like? When the score decreases when overclocking, temperatures come to mind.

Nvidia cards go back to base clock when they approach 80 degrees.

Retesting with 100% fan speed could prove your card is just not boosting high enough.

DDU the video driver

Used DDU to remove all drivers and reinstalled the newest graphics driver.

Still the same score. Any other ideas?

You probably read that wrong. The decrease in score was due to the lower RAM speed. The overclocking itself worked well, it's stable and boosts the performance.

With my normal overclocking settings the maximum temperature is 67°C which is still fine I'd say.

With the fan speed on 100% the max temperature was 63°C

Sounds good. Is the CPU boosting nicely? What are the individual cores clocking at? The cores should really hit 4.2-4.3 all core without issue.

During the GPU benchmarks all the cores are clocking at around 4.15GHz (always between 4.1 and 4.2) with a temp of 60°C.

In the CPU benchmark it automatically drops down to 3.9GHz and the temp rises to 67°C (at 100% utilization).

Is that hot enough for it to clock down to 3.9?

During gaming the CPU is usually not at 100% utilization though and I also don't think that's the reason the overall performance is dropping this much.

Ok so I just ran another benchmark from userbenchmark and the results show that all the components except for the gpu are working fine.

The gpu seems to perform really bad compared to other 2070s.

I bought the gpu new in early 2019 and the bad performance has always been like this.

Is it possible that i was just unlucky and got a bad card?
