Broken Film camera Repair?

WIN_20200621_16_11_36_Pro.thumb.jpg.16f97027eabca06dd15c04694aac8c19.jpgWIN_20200621_16_11_53_Pro.thumb.jpg.1e3a9f0edb19f65cae66d60ae36bb638.jpg

These are Canon AE-1. As you can see, one i use and the other i don't. For those who don't know (which I'm assuming is most of you), the silver circle thingy on the left is used to open the back of the camera where you can then insert film. The issue is the silver circle thing came off the older one. I can't find anywhere online where someone has this same issue and solves it. If somebody could help me foigure out a way to get the back of this camera open, I would greatly appreciate it.

I assume you need the film from within the camera removed?

IIRC (and I'm not a Canon film user) the left side has a metal panel that has a latch behind it, which locks the door.

So, two ways:

Well, three if you want to spend money:

(1) Brute force it open

(2) Brute force it open

(3) Sent to camera repair specialist and have them open it.

Tbh I wasn't even sure if it had film in it. It doesn't. So that's good. I thought this camera was totally trash (in fact, I started to take it apart for fun) but now that i got it open, all it needs is a new rewind nob!

Well, it's a Canon, of *course* it's trash! 🤪

(I'm kidding, I still use film cameras, both Nikon and Yashica TLRs, but only digital when it comes to Canon)

Turns out, those knobs are about $30...

And you can pick up used film cameras for less than that sadly...

AE-1 is a classic... anyone who doesn't appreciate that was born this century.

I frequently edit any posts you may quote; please check for anything I 'may' have added.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

i wish I had a thrift store or someplace where that was true. I live in a crack head town where there's nowhere to do anything, so I bought the other Canon (the one with the knob) on amazon for more than I would've liked to. ($160). So my new thought is to buy this knob as cheap as possible, and sell it on facebook or cragislist for as much as possible. How much would you pay for this camera?

If there was film in the camera, the rewind spindle wouldn't have fallen in...

Yep, a consequence of living where I live. I looked at some stuff on ebay but I was sorta sketched out by how cheap some of them were. So that played into it too because amazon is usually better at returns on money and such. Plus, I'm on the west coast and I don't think the film camera deal is as big of a thing (I'm probably wrong there but what do i know, I bought a camera for $150...). either way, I'll try to make up for some of that lost money by selling this one that I just realized actually works.

I use this on a semi-regular basis...

It's not this century, not even last half of last century (well the tripod is...but the actual camera is very very old)

Well; yeah... compared to that - film or digital - the AE-1's image quality ain't even a starter.

$160 would - could - get you an exceptional, fully working example of an AE-1... always worth having a very wide net looking for older film gear.

I dunno if Cambo are even still in business... digital large format gear is out there, but I'm not as up to date with that world as I could be.

Like most large format gear, second-hand, a long time ago from the original owner, who bought it new in the 50s IIRC.

Dude that's what I learned photography on, basic Cambo's and Calumet branded Cambo'st. When I was in school, we had to turn in our assignments on 4x5 transparency, and the digital camera with the biggest schlongs were the Olympus E1, Canon D60, and Nikon D1X.

Every couple years or so, I'll break out my Sinar P2. Good Sh*t

I would love to have a rig like that.  I ran a Graflex for awhile, but had to sell it when money was tight.  I still regret it, a lot.

It really forces you to slow down and think about what you are doing. Between film and dev costs, it's 60$ each time I pull the trigger.

This, for example is what happens when you are not paying attention.

Double exposure, and that was an expensive mistake. (spoilered for being mildly racy)
