Do I need a M.2 SSD

I am building a pc and am going to use the Samsung 860 Evo SSD and a HDD which has 1rb and is Sata. Do i also need a M.2 SSD or will my computer run just fine without?

If you have limited space, or want to see what all the hype is about, I advise getting a smaller 128gb M.2 SSD and use it as a boot drive at minimum.  If not - unless you have tasks that require transferring data quickly, etc (if you are just gaming you wont see any difference at all) then no difference compared to using a standard Sata SSD.

 

Not to mention.  If your M.2 slot/SSD is a SATA variant - it is no faster than a 2.5" form factor SSD.  Its when you have an NVMe M.2 slot and an NVMe SSD that you can reach much higher speeds (that in the real world, regular users wont even notice the diff)

While technically an NVMe drive is faster then a SATA SSD, in real world application the difference is negligible at best. LTT actually tested this not to long ago and even with the two side by side it was hard to tell the difference. So unless you are in a data center or have some niche use case, you will be fine with what you have.

If your mobo has a slot for a M.2 SSD with NVMe I'd suggest using it for your boot drive. Definitely worth it if you get a good deal on the drive. That way you can use any other drives you have strictly for storage.
