hi guys

i was born in 91

started gaming  on arcade machines (metal slug  ,Daytona etc lol :P )

then from there it was sega n64 ps2 GC

games used to be insane unrealistic spontaneous and a huge amount of variety

since around 2007 ive noticed companies try to stick to a method that worked (COD clones)

companies now dont seem to want to take risks maybe because of the economic crisis during the time

games now dont have the absurdity it once had

the absurdity that gave rise to games like duke nukem 3D or crazy taxi

many of my friends just got bored of gaming because these game companies insist on following a  formula

it seems the only devs that are innovating are Indie devs

minecraft dayz fez etc

it is getting better but not as fast as it should be

what im looking at is a lock on mods ,devs acting like a nanny towards the gaming community (no u cant do that because so and so) and the insane DLC /microtransaction issue

what are your thoughts on this ?

PS wish if a Gamer's union existed

If your grave doesn't say "rest in peace" on it You are automatically drafted into the skeleton war.

Gamers union? So how does the apprenticeship work? who teaches it? how long? what are the benefits?

Aside from that I really don't care about it. I love to game and been doing it a few decades but if it vanished oh freaking well. In fact my life may improve with out it as I would have more time to do other dumb shit that really don't matter  :P

Most AAA titles are all the same, indeed. But that is because people support that. It is risky to not make more than the previous game, god forbid even a loss. Investors would quickly pull their money out and hightail it elsewhere. That way it really takes a company with huge balls to innovate, and therefore only small devs can afford that.

Game development is just like any other big bussiness out there, really - like the same Samsung Galaxies and iPhones every year with borderline ridiculous "innovations" like fingerprint scanners.

I think the industry is growing out of the CoD clone formula. We have indie titles to thank for this.

To which the larger companies might take notice and setup small development teams to do small scale games. Some what like Blizzard did with Hearthstone by have a very small group of people working on a small but refined game.

But to the OP, Getting older could also start to drain away some of the magic games once had, similar thing is happening to me. But there could also be the side affect of every single game getting rigorously reviewed and previewed subtly twisting our opinions of games before we even play them. There's less of that stumbling onto an absolute gem of a game.

This is why I no longer read reviews. If a game is made by a dev that has a good track record and the first trailer grabs me, I take a chance on the game and buy it without bothering with a review. I only read reviews if I'm exploring indie titles to better understand game mechanics.

Even then, my passion for games is nearly dead probably due to personal life circumstances. I have to motivate myself to play a new game unless I was REALLY looking forward to playing the game and it shouldn't be that way. Like the OP, I probably just need a hiatus from gaming. I've been playing games on a hardcore basis since the age of 13 and am now 20. If you think about all that has came out over these past 8 years or so, that's a lot of hours spent gaming.

Games are monotonous now because it takes a lot of money to develop a major release game. It is too risky from a development standpoint to spend tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars on a new IP that can bomb whereas making a sequel is basically going to sell well just because of the already solidified fan base.

The indie scene is where the new stuff is that is going to break the general mold. The big resurgence of indie gaming in the past several years balances out the AAA games pretty well as it is a great testing zone for new ideas that can get fleshed out as the ideas are adopted into the gaming ecosystem as a while.

I have been complaining about declining gameplay since I started playing games basically. It seems that every time the graphics got better, the focus on gameplay got worse. Crysis have huge sales numbers for all games in the series despite all of them being absolute tripe, filled with stupid superpowers and north koreans speaking english with almost offensive accents.

But I do think that there is some great work being done by some devs. Especially on smaller budgets. I think its amazing what some devs can do on small budgets.

I completely agree with the sentiment, on consoles. The mostly AAA focus of the consoles, the cost of licences etc and the closed ecosystem means that only big developers really target them. Since those big developers have become very formulaic with their approach to games innovation happens very slowly.

But at the same time on the PC we have seen an explosion of smaller developers making amazingly novel games. The PC exclusives that come out these days are incredibly and very numerous and a lot of these games will and do shake up the big publishers eventually. That will trickle down to the consoles in time, but some of these genres really don't translate well as they need more buttons or faster positional input. I do think the consoles will see the fruits of this in a few years however as it inspires future games now that an Indy company has proven the idea sells.
