Requirements...
  • 4k video
  • interchangeable lenses
  • At least 16mp photos
  • Decent low light performance
  • Doesn't have to be Canon, open to any brand
Thanks!

I don't think there's a camera that can check those three boxes at the same time. There are pro-sumer point-n-shoots that have 4K video, but most cameras with lens mounts and 4K run much higher than $600. Maybe something like a Panasonic Lumix FZ300, but that doesn't hit your MP requirement.

A camera that kept popping up while doing research was the Panasonic G7.

I just wanted to see what other people recommended before I decide on the G7 or not.

X-t200 is similar in many ways to the G7 but has better stills res and should have better low light

they are about 700$

really most of the sub 1k options aren't a big upgrade over you t3

Wow!  I'll have to look more into this one.  I'm surprised that they are still making cameras with this older styling.

Yeah and its actually small enough where you'd take it with you places. It's got wi-fi built in, so you can take some snaps, super easy send them to your phone, and send them off. I do it all the time on my two Oly's.

I'm not really convinced it is.

16mp is really not good in 2020. it lacks the 24-32 I'd expect in this price range in 2020

its got bad autofocus

it over sharpens jpegs

4k video at 100mbs is lackluster

its a sidegrade more than a proper upgrade.

you need a bigger budget to really get something better than the t3 for photos and video while it has increased in bitrate on may of these lower end isn't really there. you want 150-200 on the low side for 4k

Nobody shopping for a $600 camera gives a f*ck about the bitrate of the video, 16MP is FINE, and in no way will the difference between 16 and 24MP make or break a shot, CDAF is inherently more accurate than PDAF for anything outside of sports and requires zero AF fine tuning, every camera has lousy jpegs.

I don't see it as a side grade because the way mirrorless cameras operate with a live view feed all the time, they're easier to learn on and improve ones photography over an SLR.

take a crop and you'll quickly wish you had more res. basically every canon camera in the last 5-6 years uses CDAF branded as dual pixel AF but can also use PDAF.

the xt200 has a hybrid

there is an option on basically every canon if you want to shoot live view with the screen can often also bring the better AF. the t3 will do it. really most people just should be able to get close enough with the scale at the bottom then tweak the raw in post to make it perfect

the M6mkii, 90D are both great upgrades but given none can be found used/refurbished they are around 1-1.2K

XT-30, A6100 A6400 or 6500, refurbished eos RP

the thing is most now 400-600$ cameras are still not all that different from older 800-1K$ ones
