Will these headphones work on my PC Soundcard?

LynxPlays

I was looking for a new pair of headphones since my old ones broke and wanted to ask if my motherboard : GIGABYTE H310M S2H (Link https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherboard/H310M-S2H-rev-10#kf )

would be able to take on the beyerdynamic DT 990 at 250 ohm. I plan on buying an amp down the line, however i would like to know if I really need one right now since i will only use the headphones for long gaming sessions and i am not too hung up on bass and music.

P.S I was also looking at the DT 770 / 80 ohm version, which might suit my motherboard better

Thanks alot.

Get the dt 770 80ohm. Not worth getting an amp or DAC if you are not doing music production or listening to losless files . If you game then there is no problem. Btw an amp Will not really boost audio quality it Will amplify the signal. Making the volume coming out of The DAC louder

As stupid as I am. I fckin bought a soundcard for 300 euros. I hope it is good. The only DAC with an amp built in you need is the ifi zen DAC. I have heard it is good.

It will technically work, but might have a hard time driving 250ohm, so you might need an amp to get some volume.

That's not really true. You can get a cheap amp that changes everything when paired with a pair of nice headphones for music/gaming. Not to mention the difference between the 770 and 990 is giant (open vs closed back for a start...) They're completely different headphones and the 990s aren't only worth it if you're doing music production/lossless at all..

Gaming Build:

Okay, so from my experience you're wrong here on a few counts.

1, the different models of 770 sound different and I think most agree that the 250 ohm sound far better than the 80

2, an external DAC will reduce noise floor and is integrated with an amp for powering higher impedance headphones, there is absolutely a reason to get them other than production,

3, I highly doubt you could hear the difference between a 320kbps MP3 and lossless, the difference is so minimal that I stopped using lossless years ago except in a professional context. Better audio quality still sounds better with lossy files.

4, while you're right that an amp isn't designed to boost quality, if your headphones expect more power than they're getting the quality will be decreased, so yes, an amp will boost quality if you didn't have enough power before.

So would my computer be powerful enough to provide me with enough volume to hold off a couple weeks until i get a decent amp/dac, or would it be worth it to just wait a while?

I dont want to start this again. But i have made research on internal PCIE cards and they have so good of a shielding that you cant tell a difference.

Also about that is said it was a stupid purchase is that i dont do music production. I only game and liten to music.

Thanks alot.

I had a Gigabyte H310M motherboard too don't know the exact model and the onboard soundcard wasn't suffering enough to drive my AudioTechnica ATH M20x headphones so I just purchased a cheap Behringer audio interface.

But my headphones are only 47 ohms pretty easily driven by the audio interface but 250 ohms sounds like pretty difficult for both onboard audio of your motherboard and audio interfaces even the expensive ones so better check out some decent headphone amps. Fiio and Behringer have some solid amps on the budget.

I'm just a little worried it can have long term effects on my pc incase my computer can't handle that kind of ohm input/output, even temorarily. I was just thinking of ordering a cheap amp off amazon that meets the minimum needs and see how that goes for a while.

The only problem ive heard about cheap interfaces is that they suffer a bit on the amp for the headphones.

Get a behringer audio interface or a little bit more expensive dac amp combo because fiios cheaper products cant power 250ohm that well.

I don't think the headphone amp or the headphones themselves would have any impact on your PC. Just check some reviews before purchasing cheap ones and if buying cheap go for the two brands I mentioned above, check these under 100 USD;

This is not really the best option for him. He needs a dacamp combo. Not only an amp. I dont know much about the specs of his mobo but i think he should get a dac also. Dac amp combo is the most budget friendly

Interfaces handle 250ohm headphones fairly easily, at least, all Behringer interfaces above the UMC202HD are supposed to be able to easily drive 250ohm. I will, however, agree that Behringer have some great headphone amps, the MA400 has been known to power 600ohms no problem and the HA8000 has been known to power 8 600 ohm headphones at the same time to earsplitting levels.

No matter what it won't damage your PC, it just won't sound as good as it can sound. I won't pretend to be an expert on standalone dacs or amps but my usual recommendation for those wishing to power 250ohm beyers and use a studio mic is the UMC202HD though there are many other options and the link in my signature may help guide you through them. (Standalone stuff is also an option but I don't know anything about it so I won't recommend you anything)

You're right, Focusrite Scarlett stuff doesn't have the best headphone amps and anything without a dedicated headphone amp isn't going to be great at powering 250ohm headphones. That's why I don't tend to recommend anything under the 202HD for people wanting to use the interface to power their 250ohm beyer headphones.

Behringer interfaces are more than good enough for doing music production with real instruments, I have a modest microphone/instrument collection and a not-so-modest collection of plugins and DAW programs I use quite regularly with my UMC202HD and honestly it's taken everything I throw at it like a champ. Only suggestion I'd make is that if you're planning on using a large diaphragm dynamic or a ribbon mic that you also purchase an inline preamp like the Klark Teknik CT1 or Triton Audio FetHead as the pres on lower end interfaces don't exactly have the most headroom. It's powered every set of headphones it's come across so far and if I ever came across something it couldn't handle I've got an MA400 sitting in a draw next to my mics that I can pull out if need be.
