Hello, i'm currently deciding on a cpu and was wondering which cpu you would get for both gaming, some video editing, and solidworks in college. The 3950x + gigabyte x570 aorus master with 32gb corsair dominator platinum 3466 cl 15 ram or a threadripper 3960x + gigabyte trx40 aorus master with 32gb corsair dominator platinum 3466 cl 15 ram. I am wondering if the threadripper would be better for the $600 additional cost and my current gpus are dual GTX 980

hell no its not worth it for you. TrX should only be recommended for those with businesses and or they are making money. You are in college, you should save more of your money towards stuff.

College?  You have to make due with a ryzen 2600.  Itll build character and youll appreciate a 3950x more later :)

I kid, seriously though the 3950x would be plenty, would probably get by fine with less for sure

El Zoido:  9900k + RTX 4090 / 32 gb 3600mHz RAM / z390 Aorus Master

The Box:  3900x + RTX 3080 /  32 gb 3000mHz RAM / B550 MSI mortar
