Hey there. I'm starting a build this week and have been wondering since the release of Intel's 10th gen processors if I should get one.

Last year I got carried away with all the hate that Intel gets every day and got a Ryzen cpu. I've been looking at the benchmark videos

on youtube and I'm almost certain to get an Intel, but still see lots of comments saying that Intel is still expensive, that it is bad and such.

Given that I only game on pc and not really do any kind of editing, is getting a Ryzen cpu the better choice? I see that the i7 10700k has

the same price (even some dollars cheaper) as the Ryzen 9 3900x. Is there something I'm not taking in consideration? Money is not really

an issue and I would be getting one of those two.

So, what do you think?

The thing with intel is that it's more expensive for the almost the same/worse performance. The direct competitor to the 3900x is a the 10900k so the fact that you can get a 3900x which beats the 10700k even in gaming for the price of a 10700k is great for you, get the 3900x, but makes intel's pricing look bad.

I mean, if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, sure. What AMD processor did you get? Chances are it's still more than sufficient.

If you really want to get something new, I'd want and see how the Ryzen 4000 series does. The 10600k would get my vote right now, but with the rumored improvements the 4600x might be a contender as well.

Yeah, I was pretty set on getting the 3900x but I saw this video today:

And while I'm not getting the i5, the video shows benchmarks for both the 10700k and 3900x and Intel seems pretty good on all the titles and in some I see some really large gaps on the 1% lows. That's why I started hesitating.

You already have a pretty new CPU, no reason to upgrade after a year. That is practically always a waste of money.

My current pc will go to my little brother.

I've got a 2700x but I'm now able to afford more than that. The thing is that I cannot wait for the next Ryzen processors.

I enjoy playing rpgs the most, and currently loving the Anno games. Rtx 2080S, 1440p (but will lower to 1080p if needed, I'm a performance > graphics guy)

My brother needs a pc ASAP but can't afford one so I will give him mine, and I can't live without one.

I'm pretty sure the upcoming Ryzen cpus and the graphics card coming this year will be really good, but

I can't wait for those either :(

Depends on your budget. Intel is still generally better for gaming but you do have to factor in if you want to OC you need a more expensive board and the stock cooler isn't good. But if you are looking at the higher end just for gaming and don't mind those extra costs then go ahead.

I built my current primary machine in 2016 and running a 6600k @ 4.4, it's almost exclusively for gaming and I tend to wait for discounts on Steam etc.

I feel I can go another year or two before needing more cores and threads, and I have never bought AMD for one of my primary machines before, but I just can't envisage buying anything other than a Zen 3/4 Ryzen 5 at this stage. I know Intel have managed to rice the pants off of 14nm but it comes at a cost - both at purchase time and in watts from the wall. I'd have a hard time paying the same or more for an outdated process. AMD is going to be first to 5nm and the value, socket compatibility, everything looks like it's just going to be more appealing to someone on a bit of a budget.

I'm starting to think about this build even though it's a way off, am I missing something or for my usage case can anyone make a case for future Intel at this stage?

With Intel's small performance gains with 10th gen and AMD's promise of a 15% IPC increase (which they promised and fulfilled with 3rd gen ryzen) they are looking to be the performance leaders with the release of 4th gen. The only advantage Intel has is that you can purchase a 10th gen CPU in the immediate future, but it's not like 3rd gen ryzen is that far behind.

An X570 or B550 motherboard would promise a headache free upgrade path to next gen, and the money saved on the CPU can go right to the GPU, so it doesn't matter if Intel has a small lead, a third gen ryzen CPU with a 2080 super will always beat a 10th gen Intel with a 2070 super.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

Ok so, to wrap it up: The whole point of this thread was to see if I was missing something on buying Intel's i7 10th gen while having in mind this points:

1. I will spend about 400~ dollars

2. I don't like the cheapest motherboards (gonna spend around 300~ dollars)

3. I already have a Corsair H100i Plat SE for cooler

4. I don't plan to upgrade for at least 4 - 5 years (except maybe the gpu)

Would you say it is a bad thing to choose Intel over AMD?
