590 is an overclocked 580. Nothing special about it. Unless OP can get one for the same price or cheaper as a 580, there is no point to get it.

I've been an Nvidia user like ever. And I'm building a pc for my little brother and already have a spare r5 2600 in hand. I'm debating if I should buy a new rx580 8gb for 160€ or consider something like a 1650s for about 180€ which is very similar in performance with half the memory. I'm looking for something in the range between 150 and 200 bucks. The other option I was eyeing is the 5500xt which doesnt seem to really outperform either mentioned card but costs more.

Used 580, maybe. Would be a cheap, solid card. Wouldn't be surprised if you could find one for 100.

I would recommend getting an RX 590 (you can get great deals on them used in good condition), should be cheaper than a 5500 XT and have approximately 10 percent better real world performance.

This.

If you're really lucky, you might be able to find a 980Ti or GTX 1070 on the used market for around $200 too.

Still good, the efficiency is abysmal but it performs rather well for the price, you can find for 120$. I chose the 1660 when their price was the same due to the nvenc encoder and the better power consumption

Main PC [The Rig of Theseus]:

CPU: i5-8600K @ 5.0 GHz | GPU: GTX 1660 | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic | PSU: Corsair RM 650i | SSD: Corsair MP510 480 GB |  HDD: 2x 6 TB WD Red| Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Secondary PC [Why did I bother]:

CPU: AMD Athlon 3000G | GPU: Vega 3 iGPU | RAM: 8 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Corsair 88R | PSU: Corsair VS 650 | SSD: WD Green M.2 SATA 120 GB | Motherboard: MSI A320M-A PRO MAX | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Server [Solution in search of a problem]:

Model: HP DL360e Gen8 | CPU: 1x Xeon E5-2430L v1 | RAM: 12 GB DDR3 1066 MHz | SSD: Kingston A400 120 GB | OS: VMware ESXi 7

Server 2 electric boogaloo [A waste of electricity]:

Model: intel NUC NUC5CPYH | CPU: Celeron N3050 | RAM: 2GB DDR3L 1600 MHz | SSD: Kingston UV400 120 GB | OS: Debian Bullseye

Laptop:

Model: ThinkBook 14 Gen 2 AMD | CPU: Ryzen 7 4700U | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz | OS: Windows 11 Pro

Photography:

Cameras:

Full Frame digital: Sony α7

APS-C digital: Sony α100

Medium Format Film: Kodak Junior SIX-20

35mm Film:

Lenses:

Sony SAL-1870 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6

Sony SAL-75300 75-300mm ƒ/4.5-5.6

Meike MK-50mm ƒ/1.7

PSA: No, I didn't waste all that money on computers, (except the main one) my server cost $40, the intel NUC was my old PC (although then it had 8GB of ram, I gave the bigger stick of ram to a person who really needed it), my laptop is used and the second PC is really cheap.

I like tinkering with computers and have a personal hatred towards phones and everything they represent (I daily drive an iPhone 7, or a 6, depends on which one works that day)

Hm, alright. Well, if you can't find it used, I'd still get a 580 (new, obviously).

I would recommend getting an RX 590 instead of the RX 580, in most cases, the slight price difference will make the RX 590 a better value.

Sadly the prices over here differ quite a bit even though I'm in central europe. The 590 costs about 50 bucks more than a 580, would it be still worth for 1080p?

These are pretty much the cheapest cards I could find, at some stores the 590 goes well over 250

No, not really. RX 580 will be plenty for 1080p probably for another 3 years.

Usually, you can find an RX 590 for a few dollars more or even less than a RX 580, in that case it would more than likely be worth the additional cost for 8 percent better performance (on US Amazon, the RX 590 is $3.26 less than the RX 580). Although, if the cost difference is more significant, it probably isn't worth the added expense. You could get an RX 580 overclocked version or a RX 590 overclocked version, the RX 590 when overclocked would still keep 9 percent performance benefit. If it costs anything more than $20-25 to get the RX 590, then it's not going to be worth the added cost, and you should go for the RX 580.

well, just checked prices on willhaben.at, and I'm disappointed. On our local market, 180euros usually enough for a good GTX1070, whereas I only see 1070s around 220-250 euros in Austria :(

A 580 Radeon is pretty capable for 1080p, so, if you can get one ~ 140euros, it can be a very good choice. But you will not loose too much by opting for RX480, will perform good enough.

Edit: I'd rather buy new though, due to warranty & kind of reeasonable prices:
