If you work hourly do you bill your clients for any render times? Like if a video takes 2 hours to render would you bill that two hours? Thanks

Sounds like it workers need an AIGA.  That kind of stuff gets standardized.  

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I would do one of the following:

 

1. Factor in rendering times into the base hourly fee you're already charging them, and simply raise your price a bit

2. Charge a flat "rendering fee"

3. Charge an hourly rendering fee at a lower rate than your base pay, accounting for how long the render takes.

 

Option #3 would be my preferred way of doing it. Rendering time matters - it ties up a computer (whether it's a dedicated render machine or not), and it takes time to do. But at the same time, once you start the render, it doesn't take any effort on your part to keep it going. Therefore in my eyes, it's not worth charging the full hourly rate.

I haven't done any editing for clients as my GF does that and she uses FCPX so its mostly background but typically a little extra time is added for rendering/uploads

Typically large amounts of rendering/transcoding will be billed.

Given I do estimates and try my best to stick with them, I'd ether over estimate some editing time for rendering or charge a low hourly rate for renders

 

I'll toss this in, it doesn't just apply to food.

Render machine cost could actually be above human rate.  Probably won’t be. Its figurable though. Its equipment that needs to be amortized.  It has up front, continuing, and replacement costs.

Sure but assuming steady work, you’re using that render machine likely many thousands of times before replacement. 
 

And if they’re not using the render machine that much, they don’t need as expensive of one (or perhaps a dedicated one at all). 
 

But yes, you could estimate how many renders per year, and then expected lifespan of the machine, and work out an associated cost per render.

how? are you dropping 200K on a render far for work you do as an individual?

most render machines for video or 3d work are older parts or maybe you splurged and spent 10k on one, unless you in the mac ecosystem then it was 50k

Depends a lot on how much was spent and how many times it gets used. Plus it has to be maintained whether it gets used or not, etc..  Computer parts age fast.  Technology.

Depends on what you are using. Final cut with minimal effects sure. After Effects with dozens of effects like camera stabilize and denoise. That will take many hours to render even on newer hardware

This could be.  What experience ive got with rendering engines is pre-2000 photoshop stuff. Pretty common to watch 10k worth of hardware grind for 18 hours to produce one frame. 

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

yes but if you need to stabilize and denoise a lot that sounds like you need a field workflow change.

there is 0 mention of if @BuckGup is just a video editor, a full stop video production company, 3d designer, VFX work.
