If you go for an overkill PSU does it kill or your components or is it a good thing to go overkill?

Mitzy

I’m not sure whether to go for a 550 psu Or a  650 for 2070 super and a ryzen 7 3700x
I don’t know whether the 650 will be overkill or not

PSUs only output what they need to

an RX 5700/XT is a better value GPU most likely unless you want minecraft ray tracing.

just get a decent quality PSU, check for the PSU tier list in google.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Watts is the amount of power that it can supply, when you're pushing your components, they draw more power. So if your power supply can't supply that much power you have problems, but for that setup I'd go 650. The advantage of having a higher wattage PSU over what you're drawing is that it can run more efficient

Ye I got told that a 550-600 psu would be fine but I’m scared it won’t be enough for my components

I run a 65w i5, a 2080, i ssd, 2 3.5 drives and other odds and ends off a 550W. Using a Kill A Watt meter, I never see more than 375w draw under synthetic testing.

That's not true most of the time.. The opposite usually.

I was just giving you a real world example. Take it for what it is. But even so, a 3700x is not going to use 125w more than an I5.
