AMD Radeon RX 580 bottlenecked?

I just got my new graphics card today, but after using it, nothing seems to have gotten better. I have a AMD A8-9600 for a cpu, my psu is 500w, and my graphics card is a AMD Radeon RX 580. Could I be experiencing some bottlenecking?

Correct, the A8-9600 is bottlenecking your RX-580.

Even though it is on the socket AM4 platform, it is STILL based on the 28nm architecture.

Same 28nm as the infamously slow 'Bulldozer' on socket AM3+, and the previous generation APUs found on FM2/FM2+ .

What GPU did you have before? Also check your GPU usage while you're gaming. If your CPU is at 100% but you GPU is not, you are CPU bottlenecked. If both your CPU and GPU are below 100%, there is likely a fault with the game you are playing.

I only used the integrated graphics before, because this was a budget build for me until I could get a new computer. The CPU is at 80-90 while my GPU is at 30 ish. Should I get a new CPU?

with the CPU close to 100% usage, you can bet it's the weak point. At best, without the CPU upgrade, you can crank the detail and resolution to utilize the GPU more. if you did need a new CPU, you can probably find cheap Ryzen 3 models on ebay.

Yes, seeing 80%~90% CPU usage, and low GPU usage -- like 30% -- is a clear indication of CPU bottleneck.

The RX-580 is MUCH more powerful than the integrated graphics.

 

What applications / games are you playing / running?

 

What motherboard (make and model) are you using?

Given it is a socket AM4 board, you could upgrade to any of the Ryzen 1000 / 2000 / 3000-series CPUs.

Depending on your budget, a Ryzen 1600AF, 2600(X), 2700(X), or 3600(X) would be common recommendations.

Ryzen 3100 or 3300X wouldn't be bad choices either.

Sorry, still getting used to this forum. So far, because I have yet to get a hard drive, I’ve been messing around with Minecraft and Fortnite. I had to step outside my house for a second, but I remember my motherboard being a mini Atx Gigabyte GA-something. Would you know if that’s fine with the Ryzen series?

The build quality of the motherboard may play a role on what CPU it can handle -- specifically the VRM design / layout of the motherboard.

You can run CPU-Z, and it will have a 'Mainboard' tab; that will tell you everything about your motherboard make, model, BIOS revision, etc.

For an example, when I run CPU-Z on my system:

 

Without more information about your motherboard, in general, as long as the CPU is compatible with the AM4 socket, it should work with your motherboard.

ALL Ryzen 1000 / 2000 / 3000 series CPUs are socket AM4.

 

NOTE: If your BIOS version is fairly old / oudated, you *MAY NEED* to first update the motherboard BIOS before it can work with a Ryzen 2000 / 3000 series CPU.
