about 4 maybe a couple more, i have another post where i wish to use it for free nas if u look at that, it may help clarify

For this type of load, you really don't need much. An old office machine with some extra drives would do fine. Heck, a Raspberry Pi can handle this, you're just more limited in the drives that you can add.

Something like this with some drives added in.

For such a tiny number of machines....what server you get really depends on how big a FreeNAS server you want.

If you don't have a rack and just want like 4-6 drives then i'd just look at cheap midi computers in your area. You don't need a strong CPU for backup or fileserver tasks.

Check out gumtree.com.au and ebay.com.au. Ideally you want at least 8GB of RAM for FreeNAS which will give you a couple of GB's for ARC, and overhead for dedup.

I wish for it to have like 8 drives maybe more, My house hold has lots of storage, I wish to be able to use it to stream movies to my tv's as well.

With 8 to 10 TB drives common now, why do you think that you need 8 or more drives? That seriously impacts what you can run for a server.

I'm confused by you having less than a $300 budget for the server...yet you can afford storage for 8+ disks?

Do you already have the disks? The number of disks has nothing to do with your ability to stream to TV's. If you're going to be running FreeNAS, using their jail Plex can take care of that.

i wish to be able to upgrade to 8 later, i will be backing up all my photos (i have tonnnes) scanning in photos and developed negs etc, i also have a ton of movies which will be taking up lots of space, i only wish to spend $300 on the computer and an SSD, other stuff can be added later.
