New bundle, or just upgrade the GPU?

Hi all,

 

I am looking in the next few months to either upgrade my current GPU, or perhaps get a new motherboard, cpu and ram.  I plan to reuse everything else. 

 

Currently I have :

 

Asus H170 Pro Gaming

I7 6700k 

16GB 2x8GB DDR2133mhz.

GigaByte G1 GTX1080.

3x SSD’s for storage 2x250, 1x 480.

 

I am only running a 1440p 165hz monitor and struggling sometimes on ultra on some titles to maintain above 110fps.  Now I could overclock the CPU but since the motherboard as mentioned is a H chipset I am not sure how feasible that would be.

 

Since I often see the GTX 1080 pegged at 98% utilisation in Msi Afterburner overlay, would just upgrading the GPU be prudent? 

 

Or should I consider getting a CPU/Ram and motherboard bundle from Scan.co.uk and re-use all the other components?

 

I am aiming to be all done for under £700 maximum, and obviously the less I have the spend the better, I just want to see sweet 144fps+ with the detail turned up.

it depends on what you are playing, but if its not a simulation game then a GPU upgrade will be appreciated, but if its something like city skylines then a CPU/ Motherboard upgrade will probably be appreciated more.

Sorry, you are quite correct.

 

I primarily play games such as Fallout 76 (I know) Doom Eternal, Rage... you get the idea

with the GPU at 100% you can justify a higher end GPU.

I would recommend waiting for a GPU upgrade as Nvidia is launching new cards this summer, or if you want something now with the current pricing the RX 5700XT is by far the best value, performs nearly as good as the 2070S for less than 2060S money.

Thanks, I was about to post regarding this, as from my understanding which could be out of date the 2070 Super is not that much faster then a GTX 1080? and I have seen hints of the 3x series from Nvidia hitting later this Summer.  Any good sources of rumors/facts?

Yes some time this summer Nvidia will launch new cards, this is well speculated from poretty well all tech media outlets, no confirmed date yet. Yeah I didn't look at your parts, I would wait if you have a GTX 1080, the 2070S is more powerful though, similar to the 1080Ti. 

 

Moving from high end 10th gen to anything current is a bad investment, I still have my GTX 1080 and 1080Ti, I did not bother with current gen RTX, it would be a pointless upgrade. We have to wait for the new stuff.

I have been having thoughts regarding the 2080ti, a lot of money but surely a LOT of GPU that would last the next few revisions of my build down the line?

Yeah but why not wait a gen it's not that far away. I don't think it is worth it at this point.

The last thing you want to get is spending all that money, and the new parts have not much of a improvement of what you've currently have. Why must you need to have your games run at Ultra maintain an 110FPS or higher? Want higher FPS, then lower your game quality.

I'm going to see what the 3x gen brings to the table  I'm a bit of a graphics snob, so like turning all the details up.  It's an endless chore keeping the hardware capable though.

As am I but single generational upgrades provide diminishing returns for the money. For the most part just upgrade hardware on a 2 gen cycles is 'best'. The 6700k will become a bottle neck with something like a 2080 Ti or new gen 3070/3080/3080Ti (assuming naming is 3xxx).

I've no doubt it will become a bottleneck, however the GPU will be living on into the next system, I just want to try and get a boost on my current performance with a GPU upgrade  Only so far I can OC this 1080 before it locks up.

Good plan, yeah GPU can be kept for a 2 gen cycle easily.
