Need network help please

I am at my girlfriends house trying to download games on my new laptop. I've tried wifi and ethernet and I can't get above 12mbps on either. I did a speed test on my phone and her laptop and the download speeds are 200mbps. I am pretty sure the problem is with my laptop. Can anyone help me figure this out please?

You've given us basically no information to work with so lets start with the following:

1) What are you downloading? Steam games? Browser stuff? Something else?

2) Have you run a speedtest from the laptop? If so what speeds do you get?

3) What model laptop? What about the router?

4) What speed does your NIC negotiate to when plugged into the router?

---Check by going to Network and Sharing Center and clicking on the Ethernet connection. Then look for "Speed:" and tell us what it says.

Are you aware of MB vs Mb?

For example, Steam reports in MB and Speedtest.net in Mb.

 

1MB = 8Mb.

I have tried downloading in both steam and epic games and get the same slow download speeds. here is a link to my speed test https://www.speedtest.net/result/9343079724.png i am trying to get as much info as possible. im not the most knowledgable when it comes to this stuff. sorry in advance

You're probably not using the wired connection and downloading through the wireless connection of your laptop.

Try disabling your wireless network card if you have an ethernet cable plugged in.

If you have antiviruses with firewalls or net filtering, those can also badly interact with downloads and slow them down.

I have disbaled the wifi and am running off the ethernet. the laptop came with mcafee of course and i definitely deleted that. not sure about negotiating the firewall or net filtering settings though to be honest

forgot to include the model of the router. it is a cisco xb3 from comcast

Hmm, everything is gigabit enabled so unless there is a speed limiter on the router or something else going on with your device I'm kind of stumped as to what might be causing this issue. Now earlier you said Steam and Epic, both of which show downloads in MB/s (Megabytes) by default, which would mean you're getting around 100Mbps but that's only if you kept the defaults and didn't change the display in settings to show it in Mb (megabits) per second.

The router has gigabit ports so it's not limited there either but the speed test you showed has me really stumped unless Comcast is just throttling those like crazy right now.

I may have gotten my MBs and Mbs mixed up. i provided screenshots to everything i could to help clarify things

Yup, so ~500kB is about 4Mbps so you're definitely seeing very slow speeds.

I hate to suggest a router reboot but not much else is popping into my head right now

I've done a router reboot twice and speeds on the laptop are still slow while speeds on everything else is fine, maybe the laptop is defective and i should return it?
