Get the xeon if you can afford it. Also, get a NF-F12 instead of the P12.

The xeon will be betterl. BTW that PSU is way to large just in case you want to save some money. And the 250D supports an H100i. You could use the money you save on the PSU to get that. Just a thought.

Didn't look at the model of the xeon lol

Noted, fixing.

Thanks for your response.

I was tossing up with the 550w and the 650w, it was $10 difference so I figured step it up. The budget can extend $400 more, but he doesn't want me going stupid with things.

That's a pretty good deal then. Though if the budget can extend $400 the H100 is a good upgrade, or maybe a 780ti? Unless he wants to mine.

Stupid with things...?

You do realize the motherboard does not affect performance yet you chose such an expensive one and that the fast ram is basically a waste of money... right?

It's $40 more for the H100/H100i, but considering he's never going to overclock (I didn't even want to put in the current proposed) the difference will never really be worth it. I think the 780Ti may be a little overkill, but I'll consult him and see what he things.

The RAM was $4 more than the cheapest 1600MHz, and he wants this motherboard. I proposed a MSI board that's a 3rd of the price

My bad on the ram, I misread the price. However, it's not in stock anyway.

Does he have reasoning behind wanting the motherboard?

Hey there,

My friend has acquired me to build a quiet, small, system with everything for anything he could ever want to do, from Gaming and development all the way to VMs, he also wants it to be ascetically pleasing, and it has to have liquid cooling in it.

Here is what I've got so far. I'm tossing up between the Xeon and a i5. He doesn't want to overclock and the prices are dead even.

MAXIMUS-VI-IMPACT-thumb.jpg ASUS Maximus VI Impact Motherboard  In stock $325.00  button_update_cart.gif$325.00 btn_x.gifCC250D-thumbnew.jpg Corsair Obsidian 250D Mini ITX Case  Due 11/03/14 $119.00  button_update_cart.gif$119.00 btn_x.gifBX80646E31230V3-thumb2.jpg Intel Xeon E3 1230 V3  In stock $299.00  button_update_cart.gif$299.00 btn_x.gifMZ-7TE120BW-thumb.jpg Samsung 840 EVO Series 250GB SSD  In stock $189.00  button_update_cart.gif$189.00 btn_x.gifCWCH60-SE_s.jpg Corsair Hydro Series H60 SE CPU Cooler  In stock $95.00  button_update_cart.gif$95.00 btn_x.gifNF-P12-PWMs.jpg Noctua NF-P12 PWM 120mm Fan  In stock $29.00  button_update_cart.gif$58.00 btn_x.gifCMPSU-RM650-thumb.jpg Corsair RM-650 80 Plus Gold Power Supply  In stock $159.00  button_update_cart.gif$159.00 btn_x.gifR929OC-4GD-GAssa.jpg Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC 4GB BF4 Bundle  In stock $549.00  button_update_cart.gif$549.00 btn_x.gifGS-F3-2133C11D-16GZL-thb.jpg G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-2133C11D-16GZL (2x8GB) 16GB DDR3

Guessing this is from PCCG. There are a few things wrong with this build.

1) Maximus VI Impact - for a computer that's not even geared towards overclocking, this is just plain stupid. Go with a mid-range Z87 board.

2) H60 Cooler - no overclocking, you don't need this, it's just going to be loud. Just get a Noctua NH-U12S. It'll be quieter and you'll be happier with it.

3) DDR3-2133 RAM - again, just stupid.

He is a forum moderator, so he doesn't actually work in person with LMG. He's just volunteering on the forum.

And I'd tell him to ditch the water cooler and get a nice air cooler for $20 less. It would perform the same. (why does he want watercooled btw?)

Edit: 800th post, Yay! :D Only took me about a year...

Have a read through the whole original post.

Have a look at the posts before yours.

I'm using PC case as a listing area, I prefer MSY, the local guys do fair deals.

I did. But I still think my points stand. You're spending a lot of money on parts that give no perceivable performance advantages in this build.

Hey there,

Here is what I've got so far. I'm tossing up between the Xeon and a i5. He doesn't want to overclock and the prices are dead even.

since you're not overclocking there's no need to buy a z87 chipset mobo.  with the money you save on that you can get a better cpu and still save money, around 75 going with the most expensive option

here's what I recommend

motherboard:

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=138_1019&products_id=23598

if you need wifi, get this

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=138_1019&products_id=23792

if you need wifi and wanna stay asus get this

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=138_1019&products_id=24388

cpu

the with the money saved you can get a 4770 (non k as you won't be overclocking)

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=187_1490&products_id=23496

you can also save some money on the psu if you want, I'd get at least an 80+ bronze 450watt or higher.  just make sure it has the amp's required to drive that graphics card and all the pci-e cables you'll need.  some of the lower watt psu's can lack in those 2 departments

Edit:

if you say the Impact board for aesthetics, it's kind of a moot point, you'll barely be able to see the board through that tiny window the 250D has and with the tubing from the cooler going over it

HP something | 5600X | Corsair  16GB | Zotac ArcticStorm GTX 1080 Ti

CaseLabs SM8 | EK Supremacy | UT60 420 | ST30 360 | ST30 240

Gentle Typhoon's and Noctua's and Noiseblocker eLoop's
