Is 4k really worth it?

Hey guys so its been 5 years since my last build and and finally time for an upgrade.

Im in the process of building my new pc to keep up with the newest games with higher gpu demands

but Im having trouble deciding whether its worth it to buy a 4k monitor or get a great QHD (2k) for half the price and upgrade down the road. Is 4k really worth it???

i have a $700 budget.

This is my setup so far:

CPU: Intel Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i RGB PLATINUM SE 63 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

Its performance baseline vs 1440p 120-144hz is pretty bad.. on most GPU's.
If you prefer sharpness over speed, then it's the option to look into..

But I'd be comparing 1080p to 1440p and 1440p to 4K to really make sure..
Compare wherever you can.
I'd choose 1440p over 4K until GPU's are powerful enough to make 4K perform as good as 1080p High Hertz panels currently have.

GPU's need to be more powerful IMO for 4K to become standardized for literally everyone.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

If it's for gaming, I'd look for a 144Hz 1440p panel, instead of a 4K one, it just offers the best of both worlds imo.

PS: 2K is not 1440p/WQHD

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

nah, 1440p 144hz would be much much better overall

Main PC [The Rig of Theseus]:

CPU: i5-8600K @ 5.0 GHz | GPU: GTX 1660 | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic | PSU: Corsair RM 650i | SSD: Corsair MP510 480 GB |  HDD: 2x 6 TB WD Red| Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Secondary PC [Why did I bother]:

CPU: AMD Athlon 3000G | GPU: Vega 3 iGPU | RAM: 8 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Corsair 88R | PSU: Corsair VS 650 | SSD: WD Green M.2 SATA 120 GB | Motherboard: MSI A320M-A PRO MAX | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Laptop:

Model: ThinkBook 14 Gen 2 AMD | CPU: Ryzen 7 4700U | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz | OS: Windows 11 Pro

Photography:

Cameras:

Full Frame digital: Sony α7

APS-C digital: Sony α100

Medium Format Film: Kodak Junior SIX-20

35mm Film:

Lenses:

Sony SAL-1870 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6

Sony SAL-75300 75-300mm ƒ/4.5-5.6

Meike MK-50mm ƒ/1.7

PSA: No, I didn't waste all that money on computers, (except the main one) my server cost $40, the intel NUC was my old PC (although then it had 8GB of ram, I gave the bigger stick of ram to a person who really needed it), my laptop is used and the second PC is really cheap.

I like tinkering with computers and have a personal hatred towards phones and everything they represent (I daily drive an iPhone 7, or a 6, depends on which one works that day)

another question i had was about freesync and g-Sync since ill be running Nvidia is it that much noticeable? most g sync monitors go up in price in comparison to freesync if i found a 144hz ips monitor but had freesync instead of gsync would that make a huge difference?

I wouldnt spend any more than what it would cost to grab something like a Asus VG27AQ, when it comes to LCD monitors.

However, the Lg 48" CX OLED on the other hand ..thats going to be epic. Cant wait for it to release. 4k 120hz VRR , and BFI .. all the benefits of OLED ..yummy.
