Upgrade Mobo or CPU first.

Trying to split the costs a little bit, I have an 8700k and an MSI z370 -A pro. While I have been happy with the performance so far, I am starting to look into upgrades, most likely to  9th gen intel. Would I be better off just getting the 9th gen coffee lake and popping it in to the z370? or getting a z390 board now and waiting for the 9th gens to go down in price a bit. 

 

or should i make the switch to ryzen instead? 

 

I mostly play games, do folding@home, and then random browsing and projects on this pc.

Sounds like you have a good CPU for your goals. Six solid cores will serve you well for those tasks for quite some time yet.

Then you'll definitely be wasting money by upgrading either. Performance will only get cheaper between now and the time you really have something noticeable to gain from upgrading.

ok, so maybe I am just getting a little bit of FOMO or something, i don;t know what the term is for it but like wanting to upgrade just because. However i will say that the motherboard I have really bothers me. It has as stupid white led on it that i can't figure out how to turn off. not like an led light, but a led strip integrated into the pcb.

What memory do you have. The memory controller is good for over 4000mhz frequency, there's some performance gains left if your running 3200mhz or less.

Well, in that case you can upgrade whatever you just feel like, as it would all fulfill that desire while being equally irrelevant for the day to day experience.

An 9th gen CPU may be no upgrade at all depending on how lucky he gets in the silicon lottery. Ultimately, the "9th gen" is just the "8th gen" with more cores at the top of the lineup, which itself was the 7th gen with more cores, which was the 6th gen with somewhat higher clocks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think that is a great idea and something I hadn't considered.

That is also probably smarter eh? I have been on intel for a long time, so maybe just holding out a little longer for zen 3 is the way to go.

I have an I7 4770 and I also would like to upgrade, but it's still doing everything I ask it to do quite well so it would be throwing money away in an upgrade if I don't even see that much of a performance gain.  If I spend close to 1.5k on a ryzen upgrade and I ask myself if the improvement in performance was worth that much money, I want the answer to be yes ... and it will be yes when I'm not able to play the game I want at the fps I want.  That's why it's not worth it for now and I'm waiting for next year to upgrade.  In the meantime I would really like to have a I7 K cpu to overclock but even that is not worth it unless I can find it for under 50$ cad. ... anyway just my 2cents

 

If you really want to upgrade stuff maybe look for peripherals or some nice audio solution ... then become an audiophile keyboard addic ...
