Very rarely are eGPUs actually worth their money. What kind of performance are you looking for, and what is your budget?

The thunderbolt is an optional addon. So if op is 100% certain their laptop has this addon then it might be worth to maybe look into getting an egpu. Even tho the 6700hq is anything but a great cpu nowadays.

Does it have a thunderbolt icon near any of your ports?

Yeah I was wrong, sorry.

This enclosure is on sale for $640: https://www.newegg.ca/p/N82E16814986002?Description=thunderbolt gpu&cm_re=thunderbolt_gpu-_-9SIADDZAGW2367-_-Product
Whatever money you have left you can spend on a GPU to put in it.

You can also go used and look around for the gigabyte gaming box rx580. Which is sold for the same price as that dock but with an rx580 in it already which is as far as I would push a 6700hq.

Consider a new laptop, as the CPU is 5 years old and you want a new GPU anyway. Also consider building a desktop, because you won't have as many issues with upgrading in the future. It is also cheaper to go with a desktop.

You can easily build a far better desktop than your laptop for that money.
