Time to Upgrade GPU? (980)

Go to solution Solved by Zoolook,

I'm rocking a 1060 which is roughly the same performance depending on the game, and am definitely waiting for 3rd gen. Even if it's not a huge leap in performance, 2nd gen cards will drop in price quite a lot. Hold off a few months.

Hi to everyone

Last month I upgraded my system to:

  • CPU Ryzen 3700x
  • Motherboard Asus strix X570 Gaming E
  • RAM 32 GB G.Skill 3200

but i wonder if I should upgrade my GPU

As you can see in my specs:

  • Spoiler

    • CPU Ryzen 3700x
    • Motherboard Asus strix X570 Gaming E
    • RAM 32 GB G.Skill 3200
    • GPU GTX 980 Strix
    • Case Corsair 760T
    • Storage 1 TB Samsung 860 EVO + Seagate Barracuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB 5900 6.0Gb/s +2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm
    • PSU EVGA superNOVA 850 G2
    • Display(s) Asus swift pg278q
    • Cooling Corsair H115i Platinum

I play 1440 p AAA games like The Witcher 3 (just started a new + game) (and maybe, in a near future I will change my current display or add a 4k one to be the main one) Should I upgrade now? (despite de Coronavirus thing, and just in case that the prices wont be affected by that)

my budget is unterminated, but I don't want to spend a lot if its not worth it

Ty

Edit: As you can see, I using a G Sync monitor so i guess im with team green...

What's your budget roughly? You could always get a new GPU now (like a 2070S would be pretty nice) but then again I think your current GPU still has some kick left in it, you could maybe wait until the new nvidia cards arrive? Then again you're playing in 1440p so I don't really know...

The 3000 series of nvidia is most likely launching this summer so maybe wait.

literally I have no budget, I was thinking on the 2080 ti but I know about the possible launch of the 30X0 lineup just like jaslion said...
At the moment im fine with my 980 but im also kind of impacient and dont know if the Coronavirus will delay the launch

If you're willing to wait, then it really is a good idea to wait and see if the new AMD and Nvidia cards are actually competing on the ultra-high end. 2nd gen for the RTX, 2nd gen Navi with first gen raytracing, should be an interesting time.

I was pondering the same thing with the new ones coming out. If you can wait one or two months, do the EVGA step up program. If they are right that we're looking at August or September, the step up program gives you 90 days after purchase of the evga card, registration and purchase or step up program to upgrade it (at full retail difference).

I'm just trying to figure out my safety margin for buying 2000 series now but make sure I get in window of 3000 release in the 90 day window. Unfortunately, evga won't extend it beyond 90 (i tried) and we don't have solid release dates so anything is a gamble.

Sorry, one last thing. I've seen sales and rebates on 2070's and 2080's (supers and non-super models) so you should be able to get a good deal if you look and are patient. EVGA is also releasing a new 2070/2080 super KO models which are supposed to be decent but budget friendly. Not sure you can't do better though with something on sale and rebates.

Yeah, I'm not sure if COVID is going to delay everything. You could get a 2080 super now (ti is over priced), skip first gen 3000 and get a 3000 TI or super when those are released.
