Recommended GPU for COVID-19 folding?

I currently do not have a video card, want to get a decent card for folding, not much of a gamer anymore so it would be used primarily for folding,

 

Have a PCIe 16x slot available and a midrange budget, no particular preference for AMD or nVidia; just want decent folding performance.

If you only going for folding, I would suggest an older card from the GTX9xx or GTX10xx series that way you cost out of pocket isn't going to burn your pocket.

20xx series will run high since they are new of course.

 

I have a 980, 1080 and 2x K40's. I get decent numbers.

980 will get approx 175k ppd

1080 will get approx 775k-800k ppd

 

TI versions will garner more of course.

Interesting, my 1050 earns about just as many points per day as your 980.

Difference between the Kepler and Maxwell architecture.

 

My K40's are Kepler as well.

Indeed, I was just surprised that Pascal or the optimization for Pascal was so much better than Maxwell.

As others have mentioned Maxwell or Kepler cards can be handily beaten by a low-end Pascal in terms of production and the newer Turing cards are even more efficient in terms of Points Per Day (PPD) per Watt of electricity consumed. If you are on a tight budget then a used Pascal might be a good option.

 

Depending on your budget I would suggest either

GTX1660Ti (780kPPD)

RTX 2060 Super (1.4MPPD)

RTX 2070 Super (1.95MPPD)
