Can i get internet to my server by connecting ethernet between it and my desktop pc which has a connection

I know this is a big dumb question but i'm interested if it'll work

Yes, You need to enable sharing in the Network and sharing centre though.

Yeah you also do stuff like connect ethernet to a laptop and bridge a wifi connection.

 

Essentially making it an expensive client mode WAP.

 

Bit janky but can get you out of trouble.

This will work if it needs Internet but sharing a network connection through a Windows PC works kind of like 1/2 NAT. If you need to port forward for the server expect that you may experience issues. In this case take Lurick's advice and just pick up a cheap 10/100/1000mbps switch.

 

If you do, make sure you read the box that it says Switch not Hub and that it's 10/100/1000mbps on all interfaces not 10/100 or 10/100 with a single 10/100/1000 interface.
