My CPU isn't going into the idle mode when I'm not using it. I have it overclocked to 4.5Ghz and it used to idle at 800Mhz but now that i had to re-overclock my computer it wont do that anymore.

Any suggestions?

It will run at 4.5ghz but the temp shouldnt have increased. Thats what happens when you OC, or at least im pretty sure.

Have you made sure you're not running any programs and that your system is truly idle?

not knowing how you overclocked it but did you disable any CStates in the UEFI?

did you change your power option profile to high performance? check to see if any

appz are running in the background using CPU utilization or resources.

My system is at 0% on the CPU at 4.5Ghz at 45*C.

Only running things like Spotify, Skype, and this browser.

Well i overclocked it basically the same as Linus did in his z87 overclocking video and also like how the Asus north america z87 overclock video did.

Basically Manually by setting XMP on ram and then setting sync all cores, then inputting 45 then changing the voltage around in manual mode trying to find a stable clock. Then after that once i found a stable clock i set it to adaptive mode and then here i am.

Nothing is running.

And it used to be a lot cooler before i stupidly set my UEFI to "Optimized defaults" when it wasn't need.....

My system would clock from 2.3 ghz to 4.6 ghz if I opened a browser + skype. Skype likes to be cpu heavy for some reason.

The thing that is confusing me is that my computer used to run at 800Mhz and be at like 28 Celcius but now it only runs at 4.5Ghz and some times will go down to 3.5Ghz now that i stupidly reset my UEFI and had to re-overclock

Why are you guys so troubled if your CPU runs at a constant speeds, that's what I can't understand. Running, at for example 45C vs 28C is not a big deal for the processor, it can handle it even at 24/7 operation and will outlast your system upgrade cycle.

If you really want to let it run slower in idle, go into the BIOS and enable Intel Speed Step Technology, EPU of your ASUS motherboard as well as C-States. In Windows go the Power Settings in the control panel and click on the Balanced profile.

PS: I intentionally run my processor at 4.8GHz constant speed for at least 12h a day it is completely fine.

What happened is that your Power Option mode has most likely switched to High Performance mode and that happens sometimes when OCing. What @arideano and @Brazsty is saying is a simple fix for your problem. All you need to do is click the start button, then type power options in the search then click on Power Options and check to see what power plan is activated, if High Performance is selected you will always run at 100% even if you are not doing anything so just select Balanced (recommended).

The difference is that windows allows you to set a minimum and maximum CPU power state and by default windows sets Balanced mode which has 5% minimum and 100% maximum CPU usage but when OCing it sometimes selects High Performance mode which has 100% minimum and 100% maximum CPU usage.

Also, some parameters change when a newer BIOS is installed as the changed settings are what the vendor's choice is for that BIOS version and it can may make more heat. For example the BIOS that came with my motherboard....can't remember the version number....when i did my OC of 4.7GHz had my idle temperature at 30C. My CPU's power phase was on standard, the Duty Control was at T.Probe and other settings were different and with the latest UEFI the power phase is on extreme and the Duty Control is on Extreme and with the same OC of 4.7Ghz i now have an idle temperature of 33C.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.
