A buddy of mine decided to upgrade his RAM

He bought Corsair DDR4 Dominator Platinum, to replace his G.Skill DDR4 Aegis.

But as we found out the hard way, AMD Ryzen doesn't go higher than 2133Mhz on the RAM.
So now he's left with a hard lock on his RAM speed, perhaps he could Frankenstein these ram sticks onto the same board to at least let him get a boost on his capacity.

So is it at all possible to combine 2 different brands and 2 different capacity sizes without too much of a penalty, still having a overall positive outcome ?

(Edit: The capacity is the same on the modules, just had the wrong link sent to me)

Lemme know guys 😄

Sounds like an OE.  I run well outside of Ryzen spec stable, so running in spec is expected and should be or your have an issue with your hardware.  What motherboard does he have?  What CPU?  Both have unique memory controllers with unique thresholds.

My 3800MHz RAM would disagree :)

What board does your friend have?

He has a MSI B350 Tomahawk
We found that that board does support to 3200Mhz

I assume you've tried to enable DOCP in BIOS?

He did try to enable XMP and the MSI Memmory Try It !

To no avail
CMD still reported 2133Mhz

I noticed that the BIOS version is from 2017, I would first suggest trying to update the BIOS version to the latest available for that board. There might be a bug on that version.

Ryzen first gen, IMC on that might stop at anything between 2800mhz to 3200mhz. suggest making your way up that ladde to see where the IMC stops.

I also came here to say this.  The new BIOS revisions help a lot for the AGESA profile updates, but also the IMC on the original Ryzen chips wasn't as good.  Had a similar experience with the 1700 that's currently in mah wife's PC.
