Upgrading my graphics card

yaird

First off, im new to computers so sorry if I sound dumb. I have 3 monitors (all 60hz) setup to my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB graphics card. In the future I am getting a 240hz monitor as well if that is any needed info. I am looking to upgrade or addon a new graphics card. I don't know If I should replace the one I have now and get a whole new one that's better. Or get a new one and add it to the other graphics card I already have installed. I also don't know if I would need to get the same graphics card to make them compatible to be used at one time or if it would be better to get a better graphics card and add it to the other one. Either way, which graphics card would you recommend for either option. (I don't have the money for some really really good graphics card btw).

i would recommend not using sli(nvidia's multi gpu) or crossfire(amd's multi gpu) as there is weirdness. i have a gigabyte vega 56 8gb, and it has 3 hdmi outputs, and 3 dp outputs. i got it for about ~300 cad. you could also get rtx  2060, or gtx 1660. amd 5700 is also a consideration. if you can afford it a 2070 would be best, as you could be reaching the 240hz depending on the game. let me know if you need more help.

Either @piratemonkey or quote me when responding to me. I won't see otherwise

What's the weirdness about the multi gpu?

with just 2 cards, you might not run into issues, but i know on a 3 or 4 way config, it could have really bad performance due to syncing issues. its also not always cost effective in a price to performance way, as 2 1060s is going to be the same or possibly even worse than a 2060 or 2070. it also wouldnt be very power efficient, cuz its two cards instead of one

Always better to just buy a new card. Aside from the fact that the 1060 doesn't support SLI, you'd have the following:

  • increased heat
  • increased power draw
  • many more points of failure
  • worse performance as very few titles support SLI

Pointless to ask which card if you're not going to give us your budget.

If you're not in a hurry, wait until the summer.

And I know this probably isn't the right section, but what else should I consider to help performance, like getting better FPS. Some of the main games I play are Arma 3, Rocket League, CSGO, Modern Warfare, and Rust. The only games I see that run pretty low FPS are Arma 3 and Rust.

You won't be getting high FPS with what is slower than a Zen2 Ryzen 3 or Modern i3. Look at a used i7 7700/6700 or save up for a Ryzen 5 3600

So should I get a better CPU or GPU first.

Both. A 2060S/RX 5700 or 2070S/RX 5700 XT will currently be horribly bottlenecked and a 1660/RX 5600 will be more of a side grade than an upgrade
