The comparison between the two cards wasn't the point, its about price for value for a monitor.

why would you get a card that can do 140-150 fps average when you can only see 60 vs a card that can run 100-110 average and you can see 144

Well that's not how this works. You won't see 144 frames per second if the GPU isn't pumping the frames out that fast to start with. The GPU can be faster or slower, the only thing that might achieve is screen tearing and stuttering. My plan is to eventually upgrade to a better monitor when I get a better GPU, but no higher than 75 hz. I'm not wasting my money on a refresh rate I'll never see.

?‍♂️ Depends on if you plan on going with AMD or Intel. Whichever path you choose, for the love of all that is wholesome, DO NOT waste your money on these high refresh rate monitors. The hardware currently available is not at that point where they can guaranteee 144 fps even at 1080P on high settings, much less 1440P or 4K.

This is strange advice without knowing what kind of games the OP actually wants to play...

On the record I disagree.

If the OP plays primarily eSports, then 144hz is proven to improve gameplay. My RX 580 can pull 200+ FPS on League of Legends, rocket league, Overwatch, CSGo, etc. with ultra settings...

Look at the bottom of the screen. The highest he ever got in any of those games was an average frame rate of 104, no where near 144 FPS. Yes, they never go under sixty, never said they did. The RX 5700XT will certainly give him a better performance than a 1660, but 144 fps is still a pipe dream in the most demanding games.

You should never give uneducated advice.

Sure. But if he's a AAA gamer, he wouldn't want high refresh rate anyway.... It's literally designed for those eSports games where reaction time is the key factor.

That's my point. Why would you jump on a post without any indication of what kind of games the OP wants to play, and say "don't waste your money on X."?

Why would he care about 144FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider? Lol.

? With what CPU? On what settings? 1080P, 1440P? Are the graphics set to low, medium, high, or ultra? CS GO shouldn't even be in the conversation since a potato can run that game with ease, ditto for BF4, an ancient relic of a game. Reaching 144 fps with the graphics set to high in the other three games are a pipe dream from what I've seen. So, either you are playing these games at what they call "competitive settings", or you are using some sort of sorcery we don't know about. When I upgrade my monitor, the highest refresh rate I might be willing to spend my money on is 120hz, anything beyond that is insanity and a rip off. I'm not spending my money on a higher end GPU just to game at low settings at 1440P. I might as well game at 1080P if I'm doing that, and I'm never going back to 1080P. Really, I've said all that needs to be said on this. Whatever the O.P decides, its his money in the end.

Yeah screw that, its 1440P for me or no deal. I just know I'm not spending upwards of $200 or more on a 1440P, 144hz monitor being fully aware of the hardware limitations that will likely remain so for at least the next two or three years. At 4K, the limitations will remain for God knows how long, because not even the mighty 2080TI can live up to it even at 60 FPS in most games. As of right now, 4K gaming is a joke.

Unless you just play games on your 4K TV with a controller. Which is what my Radeon VII (much slower than a 2080 Ti) does, running games at 55-60fps at 4K, 60fps solid (I have v-sync on) if I drop to 1800p, which only hurts the visuals very very slightly, and still looks much better than 1440p (mine is a 45" 4K panel).

For most gaming though yeah, 1440p is a much more usable res. 1440p UW is harder to run but also quite nice (and still easier to push high refresh rates in than 4K).

? I'm pretty sure I've been consistent with my argument. Its a free market (supposedly), so if people wish to fork over the money on a monitor with a refresh rate that with the exception of lowered, "competitive" settings will never be seen in anything but the least demanding games, the majority of which being sports games, then so be it. The relatively cheap prices on a few of them is really the only redeemable quality they have when talking price for expected performance, so go for it. ??

Ryzens are solid, yeah. They don't have manual OC headroom and for some very specific tasks they're worse than Intel's stuff, but if you aren't heavily into overclocking and just doing general gaming, the Zen 2 chips are excellent.

I can personally vouch for my Ryzen 7 3700X. The recently released 3000 series chip sets offer great prices for performance. The more efficient architecture also makes it more future proof and better at heat management. You don't need any hard drives if you don't want them. I only advise you get an external hard drive so you can back everything up, in case something goes wrong and you lose everything.

Absolutely. Honestly if we are talking about 3rd gen Ryzen, there is no viable reason to buy an i5. Even in the slightly slower first and 2nd gen Ryzen 5 chips, they had a strong case. There are still i7/i9 chips that make sense in some workloads, but generally Ryzen is the way to go.

This is your best bet as you can upgrade the CPU in 1 gen as well, the AM4 platform is phenomenal value and the 3600 is a powerful CPU. Perfect gaming rig!

EDIT: Wrong GPU selection, meant to add a 5700XT.

Pretty confident I can run almost any game like arma, escape from tarkov, squad with this setup?

This could run brand new AAA titles in Ultra/High settings 1440p. So yes :P

Skip the 5400RPM Hybrid drive. Yuck.

@The LootGod Looking closer at that build, there are several changes I'd make.

Here is a suggestion based on your listed games:

  • Nice powerful Zen 2 processor for good in game and general computing performance.
    • Swapped to the MSI MAX series MOBO, so the BIOS are guaranteed the right ones for this chip. The Asrock one may or may not be ready to go out of the box, and if not that's a headache. This board also just has better VRMs.
  • 3600mhz CL16 RAM is the sweet spot for Zen 2. So an upgrade there.
  • Better quality SSD (still SATA, but just more features you'd want.) And skipped the expensive 2TB storage. You can always add more, and in the previous build, we are hurting parts that matter to make it fit.
  • 2060 Super will be a slight hit in performance, but the Navi cards have actually presented some headaches for their owners. We can skip all of that and get a great card in budget.
  • I personally own and love this case. It's got great airflow and management, and the CX550W is a solid Bronze unit.
  • Since the games listed are more visual, and less like eSports, I went for a 1440p IPS monitor. This will look really nice for AAA gaming. If you wanted something for more competitive, reaction based gaming like eSports, then swap this out for a 1080p VA panel with 144hz refresh.

  • 2060 Super will be a slight hit in performance, but the Navi cards have actually presented some headaches for their owners. We can skip all of that and get a great card in budget.

Rx 5700XT is the better card, no questions here. And the issues have now been reported as fixed as of a couple weeks ago.
