Roast My Rig

5GigsOrBust

My first build. I'm kind of proud of it and I wanted to post it online and see what kind of feedback, criticism, disapproval, and sarcasm the internet has to offer. I'm joking. But seriously I am curious to see what others think about it. The theme was all black parts. Everything was purchased recently except PSU, just used one I had lying around. Not sure if anyone cares, but if so leave a comment !

Parts list:

-Core i7 8086K (delid, liq metal, copper IHS)

-ASRock Z390M-ITX/ac

-16 GB dirt cheap OLOy(?) 2666 DDR4 OC'd to 3707

-HP OEM GTX1070 blower

-Cooler Master Hyper 212 black

-WD SN520 128gb NVMe boot drive

-Rosewill 400W good-enough PSU

-Pair of WD 7.2k 1TB HDDS

-Pair of no brand 250gb SSDs

-6x cheap Chinese 120mm RGB fans

-Gamemax(?) tempered glass case

-Don't ask about the dust filter, my kids lost it

that case could use some work. a larger front gap for more airflow would be good.

would have gotten a single decent SSD and a single decent 2-4tb HDD.

change the PSU

Definitely agree, people are buying PSU for a change as an afterthought. If you have a bad PSU the entire system could perform bad (high ripple, bad voltage regulation), not to say that smth may go wrong but low quality PSU wouldn't catch that because of lacking protections. And this PSU are definitely a cheap piece of junk. If you have high-end CPU and high-end GPU, please buy high-end PSU too.

that ketchup and mustard cables though... agree with everyone else here. Even if the psu probably will work fine for a while, you destroy the whole clean aesthetics thing with these cables. Buying a high quality psu with nice black cables is cheaper than getting a Extensions kit probably.

Oof on the power supply. I've been working recently with a few builds using a Rosewill PSU and those things suck a butt. Rosewill cases are okay, but stay away from those PSUs. Get a good Corsair, EVGA or Silverstone modular with some nice black cables and I'd say its perfect.

One option for a replacement filter is a piece of aquarium filter.  It will make the rgb a lot less pretty of course.  It’s cheap and it works though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Thanks all. Will definitely upgrade the PSU. Just wanted to get everything up and running and run some tests.

  • Delidded CPU for your first build? Damn, you're ballsy. I'd be stressed out like heck.
  • The 400 W PSU-- I think you already know, tho.
  • I'm liking the minimalistic black case and clean RGBs.
  • Cable management looks pretty clean.

Great job, OP! Also, this put a smile on my face, so double points for you. ?

Thanks. I actually bought the CPU delidded so I can't take that much credit on that. But I did manage to liquid metal it without killing anything. ?
