Is the 5500 XT worth upgrading to?

Recently I've been seeing certain performance drops in games with my current GPU I've been using for over a year. At the moment I run a Gigabyte Radeon RX570 4G Gaming edition, for some reason I ended up spending close to $200 for this card last year, when you can get a pretty comparable 4gb RX570 for close to $125, so I already immensely regret buying this card and have been looking for a reason to upgrade it to something with better value for price. I went looking for a card with a similar price but more memory and a higher clock speed, and ultimately landed on the Gigabyte RX5500XT Gaming OC 8g, which has twice as much memory and in a newer format than my current card, for only $30 more than I spent on my RX570 last year. But I've recently been seeing tons of people complaining about issues plaguing the RX-5000 series of GPUs stemming from driver updates. These worry me should I finally upgrade to the 5500XT. I would prefer to have a card that retails for under $250 with more memory and a higher clock speed than my old card, but am unsure where to turn to now as I've never used Nvidia products before so I don't know where to even start on that front. Any help regarding this is appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't. You won't really see that much of an increase in performance overall. Unless you only play one of the titles that really sees a benefit, wait and see what Nvidia's 3000 series looks like.

I don't think it's worth the money. Maybe 10% gains there.

I specifically have been looking at a new card because of problems stemming from stuttering and frame lag in VR games, and have been maxing out my GPU memory usage. But, I've been told that this could also be a CPU issue, so I'll check for problems there before I get a new card. I just wanted to know in case that doesn't fix it and I need to go looking for a new card. I hope that by then, probably over the summer, there will be something in my price range that's worth upgrading to.

I was thinking just coughing up the cash for a 2060, but yea a 1070 under 200 is a good way to go!! Good suggestion.

Without knowing your system spec it's hard to say. I really doubt it's causing that much of an issue for you, unless the game is pretty poorly optimized.

They frequently go for around $120 if you wait it out. Or if you're on the savvy side, buy a system with one in it, sell the rest of the system and profit.

Really that cheap... 120 bucks??!!!! 

Maybe this summer I'll upgrade the family HTPC from a GTX 980 then.

The CPU and Board in that link will be different by the time I get the card though. The game in specific is H3VR running through Oculus Link on Oculus Quest. The game is practically unplayable due to input and frame lag, as well as movement stuttering. It's hardware related regardless so I'm starting with the CPU and moving to the GPU later.

 

Unfortunately I'm not in the position that I could buy an entire machine and sell the rest of the components but I'll keep an eye on local listings for an 8gb 1070.

Yeah, you have to watch a lot of auctions, and lowball a lot of best offer people, but eventually you'll get one. I've gotten 3 or 4 that way.

I doubt it, but the game devs seem to push that it be installed on an SSD pretty hard.

Huh. Haven't thought about it. I guess since my steam directory is on my HDD, that's where it's installed to? I didn't think that would make a difference though.

 

Edit: That can't be the only issue because while the problems are most prevalent in that game, they still persist in just the standard home menu for oculus link or steamVR, so while my game is in fact installed to the SSD, that is not the only problem I'm facing.

Might be worth checking, because really your CPU meets the min, and your GPU should be fine. Maybe try installing it on your SSD.

If you check the system req's, they seem pretty certain they want high speed storage:

At least if you need to upgrade something, getting a 1TB SSD is the cheapest solution, and really, a good thing to pick up before NAND jumps in price later this year.

Dizmo, are you sure you're not a wizard? At least half of one? 

 

I reinstalled the game on my SSD and upped my Windows virtual memory and now, at least in menus, the stuttering is much less noticeable. Ingame, I still see small freezes while moving or turning my head fast, but there's no longer any perceived input lag when using weapons. I don't know what to make of the remaining issues but at least the game is playable now. You might have just saved me multiple hundreds of dollars.

 

I might still upgrade later on, possibly once Nvidia 3000 launches, because a 4core 4thread and a 4gb rx570 can't last forever, but at least I know that I have a bit more time to save up before I really need to upgrade. You have my gratitude.
