IMO esports should be considered a real sport even. Chess also is also considered as a sport and has actually alot in common with "esports".

I think it doesn't matter whether a sport is physically exhausting or mentally exhausting, if one of those conditions applies, it's a sport to me.

I see his point. I really do. Games like that are not a sport. Chess is also not really a sport, nor is poker.

Here's the definition of a sport.

an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

When he was making fun of them for being excited, that I don't agree with. Of course you're going to be stoked if your team is winning or if you're behind and you want to light a fire under your teams ass.

I think we all do that.

I'll never consider it a sport though.

9/10 of my friends would laugh about it too. Even the ones who are heavily into gaming laugh about it.

Anyone who actually plays a sport will laugh about it. It makes me laugh every time I see it

It's without a doubt a competition. It is not, however, a sport.

We will see how it develops in the future. I even believe that esports has the potential to surpass the "conventional sport" in terms of people's interest.

Many of my friends would prefer to watch esports over "conventional sport" any day.

Wow someone knows how to use a dictionary, that is clearly worded to describe classic sports. In e sports you are using skills which you have practised and mastered, you are competing against others for fun, and although you aren't using you muscles to run you are still using them to compete and please don't tell me your eyes don't hurt and your fingers aren't sore after playing Starcraft for 6 hours.

I get the same effects from work. Hell, at my last job I had to lift 14,500 pounds some days. I easily did more exercise than these guys...but I wasn't called an athlete, now was I?

Honestly you'd probably burn more calories masturbating for the same amount of time.

It's a competition absolutely. I'm not arguing that. By your definition people in marketing are athletes.

Really? Interesting.

Then every sport that is based on not much physical stuff is not sport in your oppinion did i get that correctly?  :o

If you give me some examples it'd be a little easier. Every single sport that I can think of is properly named.

I think they got "sport" and "sporting behavior" confused. They are not the same thing.

Playing games such as these are sporting in behavior, yes. Which is to say "fair and generous in one's behavior or treatment of others, esp. in a game or contest." It's not even the first definition of the word.

I think it's just a way for nerds to say they play sports. I don't mean nerd as a derogatory word either, hell I call myself a nerd.

now they are athletes, that's not really what I'm was trying to get at though. The idea and premise of e sports fits your description of a sport, it's just not hockey or basketball.

I think they called it esports because of their short-lasting skill. Let's say a NBA player for example, their skills may not last them until 40 and that's why they have an earning in the millions range.

Same with esports, their reflexes may last them until 40 and their salary is also in the millions range. They have 10+ hours practice same with NBA workout and practice session.
