I like it. it's faster, and in my opinion the start screen works better and looks nicer then the menu.

Win7 is Awesome, Win8 is better.

With that in mind, most people who do not like it, have NOT bothered to like it.

When the Public release was out, I had customized the "metro" start menu and removed ALL included garbage and made my own catagories, and added MY programs to the start menu.

Making it my own personal glory screen of my most used shortcuts... saving desktop space.

You can make it how you like, most people can't be bothered and slag it to hell first....

But its perfectly fine for most people, the enthusiasts may wanna tinker.

well windows 7 isn't bad my any means. windows 8 is just better. The people who don't appreciate the efficiency of the modern UI never spent the time with it and customized it, most people just installed 3rd party software as soon as they got windows 8. Which is fine, just that I think more people should try to learn the new OS rather then stick with the old.

I just use Win8 because it will have future DirectX support. Also, pro tip. Put desktop as the very first icon and when you sign in, just hit enter

I love 8.1. I think far to many people jump on the bandwagon and hate it without trying the metro system for any length of time. I used to hate it but now love the system.

And its a must for ALL gamers to be on W8.1 at the moment as its quicker/more efficient and the main reason it is the only OS to support DirectX 11.2

Windows 8.1 is really good once you get used to it. People hated it for the second reason they didn't like vista. The layout is different and everything is moved around. However, you can blabber about it all day and you will never get used to it if you never try it.

I used to really hate 8 and it's modern UI and everything, but after a while, I've now gotten used to it. It's noticeably faster then 7, especially in boot times.

With 8.1 there a setting where it goes to desktop on startup. I have that options set and I haven't seen the metro screen in LONG time.

Windows 8.x. Everyone said all the points I wanted to say.

There is a learning curve. Some people are willing to go over it, others don't.

Once you learn the Start Screen and customize it, it's a joy to use, and even better than the Start Menu, as you have direct access to your programs and games (no mater the service they are in (Steam, UPlay, retail box, Origin), and you pin any folders you want for direct access for that.

You don't need a touch screen.

I have used Windows 8/8.1 on both my 5 year old laptop, and my gaming desktop computer, and now that I have a Surface Pro 2, at no point I went "Wow it's is so much better with touch!". NO! The experience the same, and just as easy to use as keyboard and mouse. So, yea, the hole "you need a touchscreen" is not true.

Now, its not to say that Windows 8 is perfect on keyboard and mouse. Much like the first Start Menu back in Windows 95, it will take time before things improved thanks to new feedback, new ideas to improve things, and telemetry data. But it's not terrible, and I find it superior to the Start Menu. The rest of the OS is Windows 7 more polished, more bug fixes, and more optimized for a increase speed and responsiveness.

In my opinion windows 8.1 one is great. The only downside is that it takes a little bit longer to get used to i.e. setting up the start screen.

Yeah, people apparently want their own way out of the box, like that EVER happens...

And realistically it only takes a short amount of time... less than 10mins...

Kill off their icons, bring up your big list of apps, sent your ones to Metro and then organize to your fancy.
