Am I experiencing a bottleneck?

Hi all,

 

I just bought a second hand GTX 1080ti for my system.

The card works fine, and runs well.

 

My issue though is that during some game play in Destiny 2 (likely the most demanding title I play on this system) I'm noticing that card inst becoming the inferno that it was during stress tests. 

Turns out that on average I'm seeing an average of 50-60% utilization.

 

My first thoughts lead me to think that it was a CPU or RAM bottleneck.

I ran HWmonitor during an hour of gameplay only to realize that the CPU isn't being pushed to its limit either.

 

So now I am really confused. I know that game can achieve more than 90FPS because it does so on occasion when nothing is really going on. 

Also take note, the one thread at 92% was only for a short time.

 

Below I've posted a screenshot of my HWmonitor's max utilization during 1 hour of game play in Destiny 2

 

Even though the CPU isnt maxed out, is this what a CPU bottleneck looks like?

 

PC specs:

Ryzen 7 1700 (3.7GHz)

32GB RAM @3000MHz

GTX 1080ti

System resolution: 2560X1080

It defaulted to the highest settings after the change, so I left it there

with some threads being utilized over 80%, I'd say it sure is being pushed. Destiny 2 isn't gonna leverage all 8 cores and 16 threads, the engine just isn't designed for it.

I'm slightly confused.

It's normal for games to shoot up in framerate when there's nothing going on, and then tank when there's more items on screen. That's just how that works.

To expect a steady frame rate across the board at max settings is....unreasonable to say the least.

I too had an R7 1700 and A GTX 1080 Ti, the low clock speeds of the R7 1700 hold you back in gaming.

What type of frame rate are you getting, what is your monitor capable of, what settings are you using?

If you're getting ~90 FPS with 60% utilization then I don't think there is anything wrong with your setup.

I agree that is normal. I was just expecting a bit more from a 1080ti. Especially when the card is only using 60% of its cababilities.

So it is reasonable to think the CPU is at fault. Can't say I have ever experienced a situation like that

Frame rate is anywhere from 80-90 fps.

The monitor can do 144.

I am currently running the max settings at 2560X1080

 

I don't think there is necessarily an issue so much as just not what I was expecting. I haven't been in a situation where the graphics card didn't ramp all the way up 100% during gameplay.

Well most games won't utilize an 8-Core CPU to begin with, that plus low clock speeds is holding back the GPU. If you purely game it is not the best CPU for the job. Luckily you can upgrade your CPU at some point without needing to upgrade anything else in your system.

When I first started using my R7 1700 I had previously used a i7-6700k and while the 1700 was better for everything else, not so for gaming. Don't get me wrong, it is a great CPU, I still have my 1700 in one of my systems, but it is now used for work only so it is properly utilized.

It could also just be the game has shit coding
