You have two or three choices. Neither are good.

 

Edit: Service has gone down very few times, but my connection gets throttled once or twice a month due to having a few servers running around locally and as safe download/upload locations. I would recommend sticking with them for only as long as the reduced pricing is active.

I've had FIOS for the past six years. Started when it was Verizon and then Frontier came and took it over. I have Internet service only and I have an Ethernet equipment from the FIOS ONT to my own networking equipment. I cant remember the last time I had an outage or slowdown. I've read complaints on Nextdoor about them. I can't say that their service is any better or worse than any other of the major ISPs.

Still surprised they haven’t gone out of business. They were dumb and bought all the unwanted areas from Verizon and inherited lots of debt in the process. All I have to say with all I have read about them..... Good luck.

Same, on the enterprise side our circuits were ALWAYS super shit.  We even had a few instances of something like 'can we has MPLS from central California to Dallas pls' from other carriers and it'd end up being backhauled up to Seattle first via Frontier.   So much hate lol.

I also just want to say that there's two major parts to Frontier, the Fios takeover (from Verizon) and their existing DSL internet (which I hear really sucks).

 

I have had Fios since 2008, when it was originally Verizon. I only have had one non power related outage, some guy at the hub broke the fiber patch cable that went to our house. I have upgraded from 15/15 to 25/25 to 50/50 to now 150/150. They upgraded our old ONT for free, but note that the new ONT units do not have battery back up.

 

Several downsides that happened during the switch to frontier:
1. No contract discounts. We would keep renewing our 2 year contract with verizon to get better pricing. So post new customer pricing, you pay full pricing no matter what you do (You can attempt the new customer name change trick, but you will lose service while doing so).

2. Cable cards are no longer offered. I had a cable card to work with my HD Homerun Prime from Verizon which worked great so I tried to get another one. Frontier refused to give me another one. They really want to force those TV box rentals on you.

3. Watch your first bill. They did some shady stuff on our bill when they upgraded our ONT for 150/150. I realized we were being charged a rental fee for a router, which I owned already (paid in full with Verizon). They also were charging me for their Frontier security bundle even though I had not asked or was asked about getting it. I managed to get the fees returned, but I have to say that is quite annoying.

4. I'm not positive about Charter, but I believe they do this as well now, but for new customers I found out that they will force you to rent a router, even if you own one already. Same for cable boxes, you must pay for all of them (with Verizon, the first cable box was free). ISPs really are pushing that equipment rental on people. I'm kind of scared to change ISPs or leave  because we have the grandfathered Cable Card and first TV box free deal.

5. I was talking to the technician who installed our new ONT and according to him, Frontier seems very disorganized since the buyout of Verizon's Fios division. He mentioned they're treating fiber optic like copper lines (DSL) and that there were often times they had no idea what to do with old equipment (There's a pile of old ONTs that is just building up at the warehouse). I also got a feel for this when I called customer service about our two cable boxes and the two boxes they had on file were the wrong serial numbers. Adding on to the strange mystery, they sent me a third cable box for no reason that I still have to call to send back (also to send back another cable box we're paying rent on) to go full cable card only.

6. When Fios was Verizon, you could upgrade your services and equipment by yourself online, or even look up new bundles online that you might like. This was great because everyone hates calling customer service. Sadly with Frontier, no such system exists so you're stuck calling customer service for everything, equipment changes, service changes (say you want a faster internet speed), even just checking out pricing for TV packages.

7. I think this is also every  ISP, but with Frontier, if you call for help as an existing customer, the wait time is around 20-30 min. If you call in as a new customer, the wait time is 1-2 min.

 

Overall though, I'm pretty happy with the service still, runs stable and I have never had any throttling. Also frontier is still the only consumer ISP in our city that has symmetrical speeds. Charter can keep talking about their "fiber" network but their speeds are still like 200/20, 300/20, etc. I do think their customer service needs work though. Every time I call, it's roughly 20-30 min of wait time. To this day I have this mystery third cable box for over a year that I need to call and send back to them. I have two other friends with Frontier Fios in the area and they've haven't had any issues either. One friend did lose service, but it was also because of a broken fiber patch cable.

 

However as another poster above mentioned, quite a lot of my neighbors complained about the service (usually it was the pricing since they aren't tech savvy and were being charged for router rentals, etc), and most of my neighbors are on Charter. I wish Verizon would take over again, but that's a dream. haha
