If I wanna get a separate drive for my operating system how much storage would I need for just Windows 10?  And do I really need one of the better quality drives like a WD or Crucial or will a cheaper alternative work just fine if all it is handling is the OS?

Also do non-NVME M.2 drives offer any real advantage over a regular 2.5" SATA SSD?

120GB would work, since you only need about 40GB for WIndows 10, but it also does some big updates occasionally.

But usually I recommend 250GB just so you have some room for program too. Or 500GB if you want to install some larger games too.

I would recommend a quality drive, but you didn't mention what 'cheaper alternative' you're considering so can't comment on that.

Usually the cheaper drives (even from well-known companies) don't have DRAM, which makes them slower when you fill up the drives. For example WD Green and Crucial BX are DRAM-less.

No cables is the main advantage. That makes them easier to install. Depending on the sort of board, an M.2 SATA uses 1 or 2 SATA ports (as in those get turned off with an M.2 SATA installed)

250GB is ideal.

Get a good quality drive from crucial or samsung.
