3600 - 3600x price worth it

Gard

I was just browsing through as many threads as I could find on the issue here.  Reading a few responses it seems people are not as high as they used to be on the 3600, compared to the 3600x.

Is it worth the $40 extra to go from 3600 to 3600x?  Or would that money be better spent elsewhere, possibly on RAM or GPU.

I plan to use my upcoming build for gaming and hoping that it will last me awhile.  My budget was around $1200 but that is including monitor and keyboard/mouse.  So probably closer to $900-$1000 just on the PC parts.

It's better spent on a cooler.

You're going to get a pretty shitty monitor and peripherals for $200. I'd strongly advise against cheaping out there. It's a part that often goes on to many future builds, so it's worth investing in something good. If you don't you'll have a really unbalanced build; there's no point in getting anything higher than a 1650 Super if you don't have more than a 60hz monitor.

Yeah I should've  been a little more clear there.  I was looking at something like this https://pcpartpicker.com/product/p4WfrH/msi-optix-mag27cq-270-2560x1440-144-hz-monitor-optix-mag27cq for my monitor.  I definitely do not want to cheap out on the monitor for reasons you listed.

So how does that fit into your budget?

Do you have $700 for the PC, and $500 for the tower and peripherals? Seeing as the monitor alone is $360.

I was going to splurge just a little bit on the monitor, probably get a lower end keyboard and mouse to start with.  Didn't need anything to fancy on case, so ya probably around $500 for tower and peripherals and then ~900 on my PC. So I guess my $1200 budget was a little conservative.

Question:

Is the msi b450 motherboard:  MSI B450-A PRO MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard

CPU + b450 = $260

a smarter option than going with the x570?: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/QZLwrH/msi-x570-a-pro-atx-am4-motherboard-x570-a-pro
CPU +x570= $310

about ~$50 or so difference

The microcenter by me also offers $20 off a motherboard - CPU Bundle.

CPU + Gigabyte x570 Aorus Pro = $389

CPU + Asus Prime x570 Prime Pro = $389

So i guess my question if you would know.  Is there any reason to consider going with the more expensive motherboards here?  If I only need 1 m.2 slot and no RGB function.  All i would want to do is make sure that it can run the RAM at full function

it might even be possible to get the b450 and ryzen 5 3600 for $240 with bundle price.

Don't get an X570 MSI motherboard, they're trash. I wouldn't get one at all honestly, especially if you're looking at the basic A Pro one.

You don't really gain a great deal from X570. If they have an X470 on sale I'd maybe consider that.

The Gigabyte would be better than the Asus, for the ones you've pointed out above.

No, save the $40 and go with the 3600.

is there an amount of $ that would qualify as making it worth jumping up to get the 3600x?  If it was $20 gap? or $30 gap?

This one is hard to say.  Honestly I don't really think so.  The 3600x will be a better binned chip which means all things being equal, you might get another 100mhz give or take out of the boost clock but this translates into like 1-2% real world performance.  In fact unless you want or need the extra cores, there isn't much of a case to argue getting a 3700x, 3800x or even 3900x over a 3600 to be honest because your only looking at maybe a 4-8% gain in performance from one end to the other. That is why the 3600 is the king of value right now.  If I had to be honest, maybe if I could get the 3600x for $10-$15 more than the 3600, I might consider it just because having th "X" in the name makes the 3600x sound cooler but I don't think I could justify the extra cost for any other reason.
