Ryzen 7 2700x vs R5 3600 for Streaming VR games and Video Editing

Im currently planning on taking all of the standard form factor components out of my HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop, and putting them into a new case with a new better processor. Im trying to decide between a 3600 or a 2700x (either will be overclocked) for streaming both flat games and VR Games. it will be paired up with an RX 580 4GB (yes it isn't the best card, but i'm focusing on upgrading the 2400g first cause the RX 580 still works fine for me.) Which one would be better for my use case?

 

Im also looking for a good ryzen motherboard in the $150 range. needs to have an M.2 Slot(hopefully 2 but one is okay,) plenty of fan and RGB headers, and support Ryzen 3000 out of the box cause i'm not comfortable doing BIOS upgrades because my power is very inconsistent with flickering on and off. I'm leaning towards the 3600. Its stronger single-core performance will make it better for gaming and also won't fall behind the 2700X a whole lot in multi-threaded tasks (I believe the 2700X comes out only ~10-15% ahead in Cinebench).

For the motherboard I'd suggest either a B450 Tomahawk, Gaming Plus, A Pro or Mortar from MSI, as long as you get the MAX version, as those ones support Ryzen 3000 out of the box. Either of them should also allow upgradability in the future to a higher-end 8 core or even 12 core CPU (3900X is the highest-end I'd probably put in either of these boards), when they eventually get cheaper. That being said, I'm pretty sure none of these have 2 M.2 slots, so if you don't mind spending a little more, you could go with an X570 board - the TUF X570-PLUS from ASUS would be my pick.

Also, I would assume that since you currently have a pre-built, the RAM inside it will be fairly low speed (2400MHz max I would say, though I could be wrong). If that is the case, a RAM upgrade to a 3200MHz kit (or 3600MHz if it's not much more expensive) will also give a noticeable performance boost, as Ryzen loves high speed memory.

But if you want to get a x570 board, then the Asus tuf x570 would be my pick.

I currently have 16GB of 2133mhz DDR4, would that be fine for the 3600(at least for a while)

 

also would a Scythe Fuma 2 be enough to cool an 3600 if I overclock it?

Yes that 2133mhz kit would be fine for now. Though Ryzen loves fast ram. Overclock that ram as high as you can.

 

I wouldn't really recommend a $50 cooler on a 3600. Another $30-40 would bridge the gap between 3600 and 3700x.

The out of the box cooler does a fine job of cooling the CPU. If you want something cheap that performs pretty well, then get something like this....

Absolutely. It's a pretty fantastic air cooler.

I do agree it's overkill, though!

I will note that both the 3600 and the 3700X show pretty minimal gains when overclocked.

I can't believe video editing software favours IPC more then more cores...

I know that in games 3600x is faster..anyone found some links in other software like handbrake,photoshop,passmark etc..testing those 2 cpus?
