RTX 2060 running in x8 mode instead of x16

Go to solution Solved by Jurrunio,

Take the card out and stuck it in again, long connectors like the PCIe x16 slot are notorious for being hard to get it in right the first time.

Recently I've discovered that my graphics card is running in x8 PCI-E Lanes Mode. I'm afraid that this comes with a performance penalty. I have replaced my GPU thermal paste aprox. 1 month ago (because the card was hitting even 80*C under load). My specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600X

MOBO: Asus ROG Strix B450-F (newest bios)

GPU: MSI RTX 2060 GAMING Z (with OC)

STORAGE: 953GB Patriot Viper VPN100 M.2 NVME (x4)  and  223GB INTEL SSDSC2BW240H6 (SATA)

My latest userbenchmark run:

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23502893

(Yes, I know that userbenchmark is unreliable but it shows performance compared to other users)

Ryzen 2nd gen supports 24 PCI-E gen3 Lanes (4 are used for chipset communication). In theory I should be able to get full bandwidth out of my GPU and NVME (x4 + x16). Is there something that I'm missing?

The one closest to the CPU (it's labeled PCIEX16_1 in the manual)

never mind then, just wanted to make sure...

know someone that intalled it way down in the last slot b/c it looked "cooler"

What software are you using to verify the PCIe link? Are you checking both idle and load status of the connection?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Try checking your BIOS PCIe settings.

Do you have a second PCIe x16 slot on your motherboard?

Do what he said I think that this will solve your problem.

Better than that, just check which slot the NVMe drive is in. On the B450-F (I had one, well have it now because the rig has worked its way back to me for eventual troubleshooting) the top NVMe slot yoinks lanes from the main 16x PCIe, IIRC you need to use the bottom slot to avoid that (I always ran my WD Black NVMe in the bottom slot for this reason).

As for the performance penalty, naaah even a 2080 Ti can't max a PCIe 3.0 x16 connection, a 2060 shouldn't have issues with PCIe 3.0 x8. Heck when I ran SLI 1080s they were in x8/x8 (those are faster cards too, closer to/the same as a 2070) and there was no performance penalty.

As someone else mentioned, it could be because of where you installed your SSD.  Sometimes that can cause a PCI slot to operate at x8.

One question though, do you even gain anything from the 2060 being on a x16 slot.  My understanding is that it won't even saturate the bandwidth of a x8 slot.  If that is true, it might not even be worth the hassle of trying to figure out what is wrong.

Whoah... Can not belive it was something that dumb... Took the card out, cleaned the PCI-E connectors with ethanol poped it back in and the card shows up as x16 in the BIOS and in GPU-Z. Must've messed something up when I was installing my NVME. HWinfo reports my GPU as x16 and M.2 as x4.

Ironically it's in the top slot and works just fine, although I've had my fair share of troubles with this board. It had alot of weird quirks (not being able to shutdown/reboot properly) but after I flashed the newest bios (v3003) everything seems to be working just fine.

Anyways, thanks to you all for your help!
