The light internet user is the main audience. Ones that check Email, watch youtube or just browsing the web. Chrome OS also can use android apps from the play store so that's an option too. I have a 2nd gen Chrome OS laptop, it does what it needs to do for me as I don't game or do anything fancy on laptops. I'm not a big fan of Chrome OS but there is a niche I guess. When they get too expensive is when I dare sare they're as bad as Apple over charging for their products. Chrome OS laptops should be no more than £350 IMO.

They have decent battery life too but their multitasking power is not impressive depending on how much RAM it has. But I say once you hit a certain hardware you may as well get a normal windows 10 laptop. If you really want a proper office tool that works properly offline. You can use google drive/docs offline on some chromebooks too but I don't like using it.

Just now, iap said:

i just noticed the samsung laptop is in CES-2020. chrome os comes as OEM. but  who is the real target for the chrome os

People who need a lightweight, ultra-portable web browsing machine, with decent battery life, who can get all their work done within the Chrome browser, or inside of select Android apps that run well on Chrome OS. Is it for everyone? Absolutely not, however, with many K-12 schools using Chromebooks for Education, it makes sense they sell very well in that segment of the market.

My mom uses it in a chromebook and it has worked out very well. I would recommend it to anyone's non-techie relatives who may have a tendency to get infected with malware. It has been three years on chrome OS and ublock origin and I haven't had to do tech support even once

They have their uses, especially in schools and enterprise settings. I have implemented Chromebooks into primary schools as they are nice and simple for younger users. They are also quite nice to manage through the Chrome management console so that's a bonus.

Copy paste from another thread on the same topic:

They're lightweight, have a nice support from the guys at google, and the overall UX of the system is pretty nice. I often use mine to browse the internets or do some basic programming since you can have a full-blown linux shell on it, it's way lighter than my main laptop and the battery lasts the whole day.

Also, there are some high-end chromebooks, such as the pixelbook. Many programmers are using such devices due to their nice build quality, low weight, long battery life and nice linux integration.
