What the name of those old HDD connections?

NystriX
Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

They're called Molex ... well, molex is the company that made the series of connectors. Just like most 0.1" spaced pin headers (usb2, usb3 front panel etc) are often called dupont, after the company that made plastic housings for the connectors that you inserted in the pin headers.

The "modern" series is Molex 8981 : https://www.digikey.com/products/en?keywords=WM6982-ND

Other companies make clones under their own series names, like TE Conenctivity MATE-N-LOCK ( the molex Mini Fit Jr - used for atx 24 pin / 4/ 8 pin / pci-e ) "clone" is VAL-U-LOCK) : https://www.digikey.com/products/en/connectors-interconnects/rectangular-connectors-housings/319?k=A1431-ND

See here other connectors used in power supplies: https://forum.digikey.com/t/common-computer-power-supply-connectors/328

The connectors with lots of pins is IDE or EIDE  (enhanced ide) and it's just 0.1" spaced pins.

Looks like a parallel port to me usually used for scanners and printers iirc.

Edit: and for bonus points that blue one looks like a serial port generally used for peripherals like some mice and game controllers.

Edit: Yeah, it's parallel port, you can see the logo on the IO shield showing printer

See ECP Parallel LPT port (IEEE-1284A) pinout diagram @ pinouts.ru

There's also  D-SUB 25 pin , used for serial ports  (external fax modems, some scanners, SCSI controllers), but usually the color is a blue or teal.

It's similar to the smaller blue one which is DB-9, and which was used in the past for joysticks, serial mouse, even some keyboards, barcode readers, still used currently to connect to network switches (text only interface to configure them etc etc)

See DSUB 25 : RS-232 (EIA-232) serial interface pinout diagram @ pinouts.ru

See DB-9 RS-232 DB9 pinout diagram @ pinouts.ru

They don't show up that much on modern computers but a lot of them still have headers, at least for the DB-9 connector (because it uses little space on the motherboard)

It's pretty much the only reason why ATX power supplies still have -12v in the 24 pin connector, because serial communication uses negative voltage for "1" bits, and 0v (or near 0v) for "0" bits.
