3000mhz ram on h310

Go to solution Solved by Mister Woof,

The non z boards will only run ram at speeds per Intel spec, which is 2400 for i3 and 2666 for i5/i7

Hello,

I am buying a used rig for my friend on a budget, he has two 3000 mhz 8gb ram stick which he won in a giveaway, most probably gskill ones and wants to build a gaming rig.

I am seeing some local ads and one caught my eye. Its a h310m ds2 gigabyte, intel 8400, gtx 1070 but without ram. I will give him a ssd which I have laying around.

So if I install the 3000mhz ram in that pc, will it work at 3000mhz?

Also will the gpu run at full potential, as I also have a 1070 but I am seeing lower performance because of my amd 2400g apu.

Attached the mobo image.

Total costing is around 180$ plus it has 1+yr warranty, so it looks like a good deal.

180$ for the motheroard + CPU + GPU? Or just the motherboard?

This board is as bare bones as it gets... but the memory should work albeit at 2400mhz cap.

Does higher ram speed really matter for intel as much as it does for amd? Also how is the 8400 as compared to a 2600 on stock?

1. Yeah, but between 2666 and 3000mhz it's not huge.

2. i5-8400 might be slightly faster at some games and some photo editing tasks, but 2600 will be faster at everything else with resources because it has SMT and the 8400 lacks HT. If I had to pick one, I'd pick the 2600.

My daughter has the cheapest h310 i could find; we are running an extra i3-8350k on it with an RX 570 and 16gb 2666(2400) ram. Runs perfect for what it is. The BIOS on these h series boards are pretty bare so you aren't getting a lot of customization but they work. I would upgrade to a better fan than the stock Intel cooler and get some secondary cooling (even if just some incidental) over the VRM on an i5, but it should run well.
