Hi, I would like to upgrade my PC with 500 USD at most (preferably less). I wish to upgrade it because I am getting 2 1440p 165Hz monitors and I want it to be able to keep up and also be able to keep up for years to come.

A 3700X will do, maybe 3800X if prices are close. Maybe a much faster memory kit but you could always overclock more on your current kit

Theres about a $20 difference between them. So 3800X? What's the difference between them? Since I'm only gaming, would the 3600X work as well? Which memory kit?

The 3800X is just a mild factory overclock. From what I'm aware no special binning occurs either.

Looking at the 3800X now. Would I need a new cooler for it? The H7 I have now gets quite hot with my slighty overclocked 2600.

Would probably be around the same in temps due to the new 7nm process. I'd just get a second fan if you're worried.

Does anything else in the system have to be upgraded besides the CPU?

What are the purposes? Will you have a lot of games? What are you using it for, and do you care about sharp details in graphics like ray tracing, etc.

3800X has a 100-200MHz  advantage at stock and overclock at best, sometimes 3800X dont even OC as well as 3700X when really unlucky.

 

3600X has 3/4 of power, with this budget I dont see why you would step down... Some games do use 8 cores, it's better than just getting another 6 core with faster cores.

 

3600MHz CL16/17 kit if you get Ryzen 7, I dont think your budget will get you cheap Samsung B-die kits.

The purpose of the computer is strictly gaming. I play a lot of AAA games and the newest games. I play a lot of different games and my storage is constantly full. Sharp details aren't necessary but fun to have, hence why I'm changing from 1080p to 1440p.

Will 3600Mhz make a big difference vs 3000Mhz?

For gaming, it depends on the game but the worse the optimization is, the bigger the difference. Especially frame rate stability.

BTW: I would also recommend waiting for the RTX 3000 series to come out in June and getting something Like the RTX 2070 Super w/ the New 4rd Gen AMD CPU's   Since you would have saved more money, They would be around 900$ and if NVIDIA makes their RTX 2070 Super cheaper once the 3000 series comes out.You're current GTX 1080 can easily support your 1440p monitors.

How would I enable XMP? I've never found the option so I've always manually overclocked RAM to the rated speed.

It's called DOCP as well on AMD CPU platforms, depending on board vendor. 

 

That means you're also running terrible memory timings, go enable it.

It should be in the BIOS somewhere, I'm not familiar with the Crosshair VIII Bios, but search for it in the "Advanced" or "Overclocking" section, or it might be in the main page, Just look for it and you'll find it.

It's around where you change the frequency, I'm surprised you can even miss that with an Asus board.
