Help choosing new PSU

nozs

Hi all!

I couldn't decide if I should open a new thread for this, please tell if I should. Thanks mod!

So I have been using my XFX PRO 650W XXX Edition  for 8 years now, and just after upgrading my GPU to Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT (Previously GTX970) I noticed it's making a buzzing noise like coil whine under load. So, I know it's already risky to keep the same PSU on my 3rd system, but after I heard the noise I decided to change it before it blows up or something?

I made some research and thanks to you people I found some alternatives in my country to choose from. My system is like below;

Ryzen 1600 @ 3700Mhz - Stock Cooler

MSI Mortar B450 Mortar Max

2x8GB 2400Mhz Ballistix Ram (Soon to be 2x16 3200Mhz Ballistix)

Sapphire RX 5700 XT Nitro+

1xSSD & 1xHDD (Caviar Blue)

Fractal Design Define Mini C

2x140mm BeQuiet! Silent Wings 3 High RPM

1x120mm Fractal Design exhaust fan

So, the PSU alternatives that I found are as below. (Where I live, there are not so many options on the 500-600W range with reputable brands, sadly.)

  1. Be Quiet PURE POWER 11 BN297 500W ==> 92 USD
  2. Cougar GX-S CGR-GS-650 650W ==> 100 USD
  3. Corsair SF450 80+ Platinum 450W ==> 110 USD
  4. Be Quiet PURE POWER BN299 700W ==> 121 USD
  5. Be Quiet Straight Power 11 BN281 550W ==> 125 USD
  6. Corsair TX750M CP-9020131-EU 750W ==> 130 USD
  7. NZXT E500 NP-1PM-E500A-EU 500W ==> 137 USD
  8. FSP Hydro G HG750 750W ==> 143 USD
  9. Cooler Master MWE Gold 750 MPY-7501-ACAAG-EU 750W ==> 145 USD
  10. Corsair (2018) RM750X CP-9020179-EU 750W ==> 165 USD

So what would you suggest for me to pick up on this list.

Initially I was set on  Straight Power 11 550W but then suprised with SF450 Platinum's price, but can't be sure if I want to go with 450W.

Thanks in advance, cheers!

I've split it off in to its own thread. You should get the best help for your specific needs that way. Welcome to the forums! :)

The BQ straight power 11 is a great PSU and would be a good choice.

One thing to keep in mind with the Corsair SF450 is that it is a SFX PSU and you will need to use a SFX>ATX adapter bracket to mount it in cases that support ATX PSUs. The SF600 Platinum includes a SFX>ATX bracket, but I don't believe the SF450 includes it. It also has much shorter cables than normal PSUs due to being used in small form factor PSUs where you don't want a bunch of excess cable length. If the cables are too short you can buy replacement cables from Corsair or 3rd party custom cable manufacturers, and it uses Corsair Type 4 cables which are shared across many of the units in their range so they are easy to find, but needing to buy another set of longer cables adds considerably to the cost of the unit.

These are too expensive compared to the other options and you don't need 750W for your system, so you'd be spending extra money and not getting anything of value to you in return. You'd be better off saving the $20-$40 and choosing the Straight Power 11.

@Spotty

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer! Yes two things with the SF450 is; being 450W and cable lenght. (I read a review that it comes with SFX>ATX adapter, but can't be sure)

I'm leaning towards to SP11 550W right now.

Sorry, the newer SF450 & SF600 platinum models have the SFX>ATX bracket. The SF450 & SF600 80+ Gold models do not include the bracket. I knew there were some models that came with it and others that didn't have it.

SFX-to-ATX Bracket Included

SF PLATINUM Series power supplies include an SFX-to-ATX power supply adapter bracket that allows installation into any ATX compatible case. The new bracket offsets the mounting location, allowing for more space inside any standard ATX chassis, so you can tuck your excess cables out of the airflow path.

Even if it is the SF450 Platinum with the included bracket I would still choose the Straight Power 11 instead, just so you don't run in to any issues with cable length in your case.
If you are interested the Tom's Hardware review lists the length of the cables included with the SF450 Platinum. https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-sf450-platinum-sfx-psu,5917.html

Well, I found another option; Gigabyte Aorus P750 (AP750GM) => 115 USD.

I realized the 850W version is Tier A- but nothing mentioned about 750W version. (850W version is also available for 130 USD)

I know 750W is unnecesary for my build but it also has 10 years warranty, so maybe better buy for the less money than BQ! SP11 550W?

From what I know those two are the same platform, so the same tiering applies.

I read some reviews and found out that Gigabyte Aorus P850W has a solid performance overall, almost top class.

(No reviews for 750W version tho?)

Some gripes are;

  • Non sleeved capacitors hanging at the end of connectors, (I don't have a windowed case, so...)
  • Using double ball bearing fan and weird fan curve causing extra noise, especially at higher loads. (As far as I know ball bearing fans are more failproof than liquid, and since I will barely hit %50 capacity with my system I don't think it will be a problem)
  • Mostly higher price than competitors. (Not in my case)
  • Can't disable semi-passive fan state. (I don't know if it's a problem or not.)

this does help with ripple filtering, but can look ugly to some

it does last longer, but yes, can become louder over time

which means you can't choose to keep the fan always spinning like i do on mine, which can be a drawback

Thanks for the info.

Also if someone else is interested in this PSU, I found a Chinese review (the only one I could find)
