Extra 4 pin is basically useless. no current gen Ryzen CPU will pull enough power to saturate a normal 8 pin necessitating the use of the extra 4 pin.

So I bought this and thought my combination was correct until

So now I have an empty 4 pin slot, and I'm wondering if I really have to purchase a new PSU.

You’ll be fine just make sure you plug it in correctly, this may help

It doesn't, both the mobo and PSU have an 8-pin. The mobo just has an additional 4pin that you don't need to use.

My mobo has 2 8-pins, but even with an OCd CPU that can pull up to 330W one is enough so even though my PSU has a 2nd one I didn't bother populating it, less cable clutter.

Wait so even in this situation you only need 4 out of 8 and it will work?

I thought it would only work if they were separate

It’ll work just like that. I wouldn’t recommend touching any oc with that kind of configuration
