Can I take off the side of an expansion slot bay?

MintyCMS_
Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

Well you can cut a massive slot in the side panel and the top of the slot for sure... very gnarly but as long as you make something that holds the graphics card in place so it doesn't fall off or even move at all it'll work physically...

Now electrically it's another problem, the PSU in that Optiplex is too tight for a 1060.

I'm getting a SFF computer, which I will be adding my GTX 1060 to. Sadly, the card is NOT SFF, so I need to cut some holes. Can I do this? I mean the part with the screw and all.

Those are PCIe slots, says nothing about the actual problem.

Card is too long and doesn't fit inside the case?

If you mean cutting the case so some of the card sticks out the back, definitely not. On the front yes...

Not stick out on the back, just the front, but there is I/O on it that part of it would cover up.

Wot? Then two questions: why an SFF rig if your GPU cannot fit? And why post a pic of your old rig where it does fit as a reference for why it won't fit in a case you don't have yet?

That's a half-height PCIe card. But what does this have to do with your GPU?

It's all on my profile except the mobo, which I don't quite know yet. And my GPU is full height, but my case has half height slots. I'm wondering if I can cut the side of the slot to fit my card. I'm already cutting some of the case, but can I cut the slot?

How big is this SFF rig.. could possibly get a vertical GPU mount and use that if you have clearance and side panel ventilation. I'm similarly planning to stuff a full size GPU in a half-height case, but IMO cutting out the side panel is blasphemy.
