I was just reading a thread that said if you want to overclock ram for ryzen you probably want ram that has “Samsung b die” on it.  That’s not the brand of the ram that’s the brand of chips ON the ram.  Apparently if that 14cl stuff has it you can overclock it into cl16 3600 or something. I’m not sure.  Only other thing I can tell you is for memory of the same MHz 14 is faster than 16, and there isn’t just one number there are four. The 14 or 16 isn’t 14 or 16, it’s 14-xx-xx-xx or 16-xx-xx-xx and the other numbers matter too.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

most trident z use b die, but not all. I'm having trouble finding the exact model numbers for these, but i assume the cl14 kit is b-die and the cl16 kit is not.

If you need 32gb, go with that. its cheaper than the 16gb kit.

However, if you game and want to squeeze the most fps you can, go with the 16gb kit, because you could loosen the timings and overclock to 3600mhz

16gb will probably be enough depending on your use case, though i've left chrome on overnight and it actually used about 9gb by the time i woke up ?

There are also games that actually pumps out more frames when ur using less than 50% of your ram (i know of bfv and modern warfare), though if u really tighten the timings on the cl14 kit you can probably make up for that diff.

I think if ur gonna use it for more than 3 years, 32gb isn't a bad choice, and there are also 32gb kits that are cl14 (which is what i'd go with for a build right now)

What:s your use case? For gaming only, go with the 16gb kit

Gaming, lots of tabs in firefox, some occasional  photoshop and CAD work.

Of course I'm planning to use it for another 3 years :)

Aren't these made for Ryzen CPU's?

Then get either one as none of these applications are RAM bandwidth intensive for the CL latency to make any appeciable difference.

if you're building an intel system, go with the 32gb kit regardless. you could still maybe hit 3600mhz if you wanted at cl18

ryzen really enjoys samsung b-die, but if its not ryzen, you wont miss out on a lot

F*ck it! I should just go with 32GB and populating all four DIMMs 4x8GB with 3200MHz CL16. On ROG forum I saw that X Hero actually benefits from all four DIMMs populated due to it's MC architecture or something like that...

It doesn't matter what mobo you use, Ryzen will always be easier to play with timings and overclocking with only 2 sticks, it's just how it is.
