Looking to build 3950x system

I'm looking to build a 3950x work station.

This machine will mainly be used to host virtual machines. I saw that Dell has some fancy Alienware with 3950x. But I think I can build something for much cheaper. I can get by with a 1030GT. I'm thinking 32gb ram. I tried using PC parts picker but I had a hard time knowing if everything would work together.

Budget is sub 3k Canadian.

If someone could help me cobble something together or point me to an affordable system builder would be much appreciated. This is for a business environment.

Thanks :)

That's the main point for using it, it should only show compatible parts or warn you if stuff doesn't work together, with the possible exception of some physical limitations (see bottom of their System Builder page)

Holy cow, 1.8k CAD for 3950X ? That's more than twice the price for 3900X, are you sure you want 3950X specifically ?

Not that simple when you don't know the differences between all these parts and whether they matter.

Thanks @Juular,

Well the canadian supply of 3950x is low at the moment but hoping it will be better after the holidays. You can slap a 3900x for now thought and when comes purchase time ill change it for 3950x depending on pricing. 500gb to 1tb ssd , 2 tb of storage, most of it is on the NAS anyways, just need my vhds on the ssd. For aesthetics I don't give any care this is going in the server room, constant 20C in there anyways so yep. Looking for the most horsepower for the buck. Thanks

Awesome, but I thought the 3900x and 3950x needed watercooling AIO style?

For VMs ? I don't think so but you can slap EVGA CLC 280 \ 360 in there, sure. Drop two additional case fans then too.

Having someone tell you what components to buy is not the same as learning yourself about what you literally just said, "the differences between all these parts and whether they matter"

So yeah, if you can't tell the difference between DDR3 and 4 then you should definitely not be building a computer, there is a lot more to learn.

NH-D15 is on par with most AIOs.

^^^ These are really good ones, especially the CLC 280. From the GN review I read the 360 is up to snuff as well. I had the 280mm and 120mm models, they were pretty damn good.

It's not that simple as knowing a difference between DDR3 and DDR4, that what PCPP will do for you. But to make a good build you need to know which motherboards are good and bad, which cooling is appropriate, which PSUs are good and bad, which SSDs are good and bad, whether all that shit will indeed be compatible with each other, PCPP are wrong sometimes.

Yeah and that's why he should go watch youtube videos and learn something rather than asking for a list of parts.

Because I haven't seen you tell him about any of those things you listed.

And it's not that simple to teach all that stuff, i just can assure them that these choices are good in my book, other people may think different, there's no universal truth. Watch videos ? Sure, after several hundred of hours you may have all needed information, that'll do yeah.

Well your build has some weird shit going on too, like two separate nvme drives (why???) and two smaller hard drives istead of one larger one, expensive fans, expensive case, unnecessary wattage PSU...

The cooler should be fine if he isn't overclocking. If he is, then I agree the NH-D15 is a better choice.

The RAM is RGB for no reason other than that was fairly cheap and low latency 3600MHz ram. Could be changed to 3200MHz if wanted.

The motherboard is expensive tbf, but it's a high quality board with good VRMs, again if not overclocking then he could get a cheaper one.

Forgot that the SSD is qlc, you're right something like a WD blue or 970evo would be a better choice.

Expensive fans work longer, it's not that i've choosen them by price, they're actually cheaper than say Noctua fans but equally good at that.

Just feel that i'll go along good with that build. And there's not much choice in Canada otherwise.

It's not about wattage, i've looked for PSUs with good set of protections and quality, that's the cheapest one, there were a couple of marginally cheaper comparable units, i've just thought that paying 10$ more for this one are worth it.
