Black Friday, time to upgrade?

I was told AM4 is possibly the same way though.  It goes till 2020 but no commitment after that.

”likely” is a wager.

its a better one than intel.  That one is already a hard “no”

Even if the answer was a hard no for AMD, it would be better because of the 3900X and 3950X already anyway.

So at $1000 for presumably 4 components (I'd like a CPU cooler as well) what would be your recommendations @Bombastinator @LienusLateTips

What PSU do you have? Might want to upgrade that as well, considering it should be quite old at this point.

Will I have to switch to a Radeon GPU if I'm gonna go with AMD for my processor? I'm content with my GTX 970 for right now

Maybe.  More slower cores. With 3950 more only barely slower cores. High probability of lots more money though.  Estimates like $750.  Too high.  If it sells for the same price as the 9990k it’s a better deal though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Do you guys think I need a new PSU? I mean, mine's already 850w and although a few years old should still be perfectly fine?

Hmm what about sticking with my current PSU and upping the RAM + grabbing an SSD?

Okay I changed up the part list, and swapped out 3200 RAM for 3600. Thoughts?

Cas 18 isn’t super duper but I think it will be fine.  Could be wrong about that.  Ram was never my thing.  My knowledge isn’t very fine grained there.

If you’re looking to grind off a few dollars that cooler is probably overkill.  Ryzen 2, and all modern CPUs in fact are famous for having almost no overclocking headroom.  With no overclocking there’s very little reason to use anything but the stock cooler which should cost $0.  You get one with the cpu, generally.
Coolers are pretty cheap on the great scheme of things though.

I know very little about zen motherboards by model.  The motherboard tierlist does though.

Not seeing a case, GPU, or PSU.  Those may be already covered though.  I’d have to read the whole thread again to remind myself of what is happening here.

Already got a case (Thermaltake Armor +), a GPU (EVGA GTX 970 SSC 4GB), and a PSU (OCZ ZX-series 850w Gold+). Also have HDDs covered.

$750 MSRP, when it beats the 16-core HEDT chip from Intel IIRC....

Poor voltage regulation, and considering it's age I'd get a new one.

That SSD is pretty overpriced. Get something cheaper like a HP EX920.

I’ve had issues with the 970.  I just pulled one out of my machine and replaced it with a 5700xt.  The problem was the memory size.  It’s not actually 4gb exactly. It’s really 3.5, with the last .5gb being so horrifically slow it’s better to lock it out entirely.  I had to download a special low memory legacy patch to get one of my games to even run at all.  The days of the card are numbered.  It will still work fine at 1080p for most things.  Plan on an update when navi20 and ampere come out though.

Hmm good to know. I was gonna wait until next year to see what Nvidia's 3000 series GPU's are like, and then potentially upgrade that component. I haven't had any issues with it yet.

Modular vs semi modular is sort of a tossup utility wise.  The only difference is with semi modular the 24 pin motherboard cable is direct wired.  You will never not use the motherboard cable.  Full modular is needed only if you plan on getting custom wrapped cables.

Yeah.  If I hadn’t gotten a bangin deal on a 5700xt I would have waited too.  It seems like a sound plan.  Very possibly better than mine.  My move is risky.  I’m betting that the new consoles won’t make the 5700xt obsolete.  It’s not a sure thing imho.  It was sooo cheap though... gah, I haven’t even booted the thing yet and I already feel guilty.
